iPhone 18 Pro Review: Is It Worth R28,799 in South Africa?

There is a difference between owning an expensive smartphone and owning one that genuinely changes how you create, work and experience the world. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro promises to bring those worlds closer together, with a new variable-aperture camera, powerful processing, improved battery life and a more capable AI experience.

But in South Africa, where spending nearly R29,000 on a smartphone is a serious financial decision, impressive specifications are only half the story.

We got hands-on with the iPhone 18 Pro to explore what it offers, how its features can benefit everyday users and content creators, and which tools deserve more attention than the usual marketing headlines.

From capturing Joburg’s city lights to filming an event, creating travel content or simply getting through a demanding day, this is a phone that deserves to be examined beyond its price tag.

A premium design with a powerful display

The iPhone 18 Pro combines an aluminium unibody design with Ceramic Shield protection and a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. ProMotion supports refresh rates of up to 120Hz, delivering smoother scrolling and movement.

The Always-On display and Dynamic Island also make supported information easier to access throughout the day.

While the design remains an important part of the experience, the camera is where the iPhone 18 Pro becomes particularly interesting.

The camera: more control, more creativity

The iPhone 18 Pro features three 48MP rear cameras: Fusion Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto. Its standout addition is a variable-aperture main camera, giving users more control over light and depth of field.

A wider aperture can help in low-light conditions and create stronger background separation. A narrower aperture can keep more of a scene in focus.

Three tips worth trying:

  • Experiment with aperture: Photograph the same subject at different settings and compare the results.
  • Change your perspective: Use Ultra Wide for landscapes and architecture, and Telephoto when you need to bring distant subjects closer.
  • Develop your own style: Explore Photographic Styles to create a consistent look for your social media photographs.

For South African content creators covering events, restaurants, travel and lifestyle, these tools offer more opportunities to experiment with mobile photography.

A serious tool for content creators

The iPhone 18 Pro supports 4K Dolby Vision recording and advanced video workflows, including Apple Log 2 and ProRes RAW.

Dual Capture allows simultaneous recording with the front and rear cameras, opening up creative possibilities for reaction videos, travel diaries and behind-the-scenes content.

Cinematic effects can be applied to compatible regular video after recording, while Audio Mix offers tools to adjust voices, music and surrounding sound in supported recordings.

Our practical advice: Check your lighting, test your audio and confirm your available storage before filming. High-resolution and professional video formats can consume substantial space.

The best results still depend on how you use the tools. A good camera helps, but thoughtful composition and clear sound remain essential.

Performance, battery and AI

Powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, the iPhone 18 Pro is designed to handle demanding tasks such as gaming, video editing and image processing. Its next-generation vapour chamber is designed to improve thermal management during intensive use.

Battery life is another important consideration. Apple advertises improved endurance and faster wired charging, although real-world results depend on your usage, network conditions and screen brightness.

For creators who spend long days filming, checking battery consumption during a typical working day is more useful than relying on advertised playback figures alone.

Apple Intelligence adds another dimension, with supported features including Clean Up for photo editing and an evolving Siri AI experience. Availability varies by language, region and software version, so South African users should confirm which features are accessible on their devices.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth the money?

The iPhone 18 Pro brings together a versatile camera system, advanced video features, flagship performance and smarter software.

For photographers and content creators, the additional camera controls and recording options are particularly appealing. Everyday users can also benefit from its display, shortcuts and performance improvements.

However, not everyone needs a premium smartphone. If your current device already handles messaging, browsing, banking and social media comfortably, upgrading may not offer enough additional value.

Before buying, consider your budget, preferred storage capacity and the features you will genuinely use.

Our verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro makes a compelling case for users who want greater creative flexibility and powerful everyday performance. Its camera and video tools are especially interesting for creators who rely on their smartphones to produce content.

Would you upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro for its camera, performance and AI features?
