It’s been about six weeks since the start of the academic year for university and college students. This marks a whirlwind of excitement and new beginnings as they embark on another semester of growth and learning. Amidst the flurry of textbooks, assignments, and late-night study sessions, it’s easy to let skincare take a backseat. “However, maintaining a simple yet effective skincare routine is crucial for ensuring that your skin stays healthy and radiant, even during the busiest of days on campus,” explains marketing manager for skincare brand Vitaderm, Ruan Winter.

Winter explores the essential skincare products that every student should consider incorporating into their daily regimen. These products are not only effective but also easy to use, making them perfect for a busy lifestyle.

  1. Gentle cleanser: The cornerstone of any skincare routine is a good cleanser. For students leading busy lives, a gentle yet effective cleanser is ideal. Look for a product that can remove dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping the skin of its natural oils. This is especially important for those late nights when the thought of a full skincare routine seems daunting. Vitaderm’s Mild Gel Cleanser effectively cleanses all skin types, including ultra-sensitive. The benefits include balancing of sebaceous secretions, refreshing, healing, and calming.
  2. Moisturiser: Regardless of your skin type, moisturiser is a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine. For students constantly on the go, opt for a lightweight, non-greasy formula that can be easily applied in the morning before rushing to class or in the evening before bed. Moisturiser not only hydrates the skin but also acts as a protective barrier against environmental stressors. Vitaderm’s Ultra-Light Moisture Cream is a light, fast-absorbing moisturiser that leaves the skin feeling hydrated and refreshed.
  3. Sunscreen: One of the most overlooked yet crucial skincare products is sunscreen. Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays is essential for preventing premature aging and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Incorporate a broad-spectrum sunscreen into your routine, ideally with an SPF of 30 or higher. Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas that won’t clog pores or feel heavy on the skin. Vitaderm’s Invisible Photo Defence SPF 50 is an advanced sunscreen setting a new standard in sun protection by integrating state-of-the-art UV filters to provide invisible, broad-spectrum defence against harmful UVA and UVB radiation, including the often-overlooked blue light emitted from electronic devices.
  4. Spot treatment: Late nights and stress can often lead to unwanted breakouts. Having a spot treatment on hand can be a lifesaver for quickly addressing blemishes. Look for products containing ingredients like salicylic acid, which can help to reduce inflammation and target acne-causing bacteria. Vitaderm’s Salicylic Spot Treatment is ideal for targeting localised breakouts, individual pimples, and ingrown hair.
  5. Lip balm: Let’s not forget about the lips! Dry, chapped lips are not only uncomfortable but also unsightly. Keep a nourishing lip balm in your bag or pocket to ensure your lips stay soft and hydrated throughout the day.
  6. Exfoliator (optional): For those looking to take their skincare routine to the next level, an exfoliator can work wonders for removing dead skin cells and revealing a fresh, glowing complexion. However, it’s important not to overdo it, especially for those with sensitive skin. Aim to exfoliate one to two times per week to avoid irritation. Vitaderm’s Enzymatic Exfoliator is perfect for those who prefer a gentler exfoliation effect, sensitive skin as well as those with active breakouts and acne-prone skin where granular exfoliation is not advised.
  7. Consistency is key: While these products form the foundation of a simple yet effective skincare routine, the most important factor is consistency. Even on the busiest of days, taking just a few minutes in the morning and evening to care for your skin can make a world of difference. Set a reminder on your phone or create a skincare calendar to help stay on track.

Below, Winter shares some additional tips for skincare success:

Keep it simple: With lectures, assignments, and social activities filling your schedule, simplicity is key. Stick to a few essential products that work for your skin type.

Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water not only benefits your overall health but also contributes to a glowing complexion. Keep a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day.

Get enough sleep: Easier said than done but aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night. Your skin will thank you!

Protect your skin: Whether you’re walking to class or spending hours in the library, don’t forget to shield your skin from the elements. Hats, sunglasses, and scarves can provide additional protection.

Navigating campus life can be overwhelming, but taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be. By incorporating these essential skincare products into your daily routine, you can ensure that your skin stays healthy, radiant, and ready to face whatever challenges come your way. Here’s to a semester of glowing skin and academic success!
