For many matric learners, the matric dance is about far more than one night.

It is the moment when years of school life come into focus. It is a chance to celebrate how far they have come, surrounded by people who helped them along the way.

Now, NIVEA is giving two learners the opportunity to experience that milestone with a little extra support.

Through the Friends of NIVEA community, South Africans are being invited to nominate matric learners for the opportunity to receive support as they prepare for their matric dance.

Two selected learners will be supported throughout their getting-ready journey. That support will cover areas including fashion, grooming, transport, photography and other preparations, alongside the encouragement and guidance that can make the occasion even more meaningful.

More than getting ready

The initiative is being led by teacher and content creator Smangele Shabalala, affectionately known as Thick Dudle, together with content creators Sphokuhle Ntshalintshali and Philani Mthembu.

For Shabalala, the initiative connects closely with her role as a teacher.

Her work extends beyond the classroom, and she sees the opportunity as a way to help create a memory that a learner can carry with them long after school comes to an end.

“Matric dance represents so much more than getting dressed up for one evening. It is a celebration of how far a learner has come and the people who have supported them along the way. I am excited to help make that moment special for someone,” says Shabalala.

That sentiment puts the focus where it belongs: on the learner behind the outfit, the photographs and the celebration.

A big sister. A big brother.

Preparation for a matric dance can come with plenty of questions.

What should you wear? How do you prepare? What does it mean to show up with confidence?

Sphokuhle and Philani will accompany the selected learners through different parts of their preparation, offering the reassurance and encouragement of a supportive big sister and big brother.

Through NIVEA MEN, Philani will mentor the selected young man as he prepares for the occasion.

His role will create space for conversations around grooming, self-care and what it means to show up with confidence.

It is a different way of looking at preparation. The focus is not only on how someone looks when they arrive, but also on how they feel as they step into an important moment.

“You do not have to prepare alone”

For NIVEA, care sits at the heart of the initiative.

Sne Njapha, Senior Precision Influence and PR Manager, says the brand wants the selected learners to feel celebrated and supported as they prepare for their big moment.

“At NIVEA, we believe care can give people the confidence to step fully into life’s important moments,” says Njapha. “Through Friends of NIVEA, we want these learners to feel celebrated, supported and reminded that they do not have to prepare for their big moment alone.”

That message speaks to something often hidden behind the excitement of a matric dance.

A photograph may capture the final look. But behind it can be a teacher who believed in a learner, a friend who offered encouragement, a sibling who gave advice or a community that found a way to make the occasion special.

A milestone between two chapters

A matric dance arrives at a unique point in a young person’s life.

One chapter is closing.

Another is about to begin.

That transition can be exciting, but it can also feel uncertain. For the learners preparing to take that step, having people around them who offer encouragement can make the experience feel even more meaningful.

Through Friends of NIVEA, the brand is extending its commitment to care beyond its products and into a shared experience built around support, celebration and confidence.

And that is perhaps what makes the opportunity stand out.

Because confidence is not only about how you look when you step into your moment.

It is also about knowing that someone showed up for you.

How to nominate a matric learner

Members of the public can nominate a matric learner by visiting the campaign post on Instagram and sharing why the opportunity would be meaningful to them.

Entries are currently open and close on 23 September 2026.

The campaign nomination post is available through the Friends of NIVEA Instagram page.
