Eighteen years is more than a milestone. For the Feather Awards, it marks a coming-of-age moment — and the organisation is using it to make a national call for young South Africans to add their voices to the country’s future.
The Feather Awards has announced its 18th edition under the theme “The Signature Edition”, bringing together its longstanding celebration of LGBTQIA+ excellence, visibility, creativity and allyship with a renewed focus on advocacy and action.
The 2026 edition arrives at a significant moment for South Africa’s LGBTQIA+ community, as funding cuts and a pivotal local government election cycle create an urgent backdrop for conversations about equality, resources, dignity and the country’s future.
For the Feather Awards, turning 18 is therefore not simply about celebrating another year.
It is about stepping into adulthood.
A Signature That Means Something
For 18 years, the Feather Awards has chronicled expressions of queer identity and advocacy across South Africa.
Now, the organisation says it is deliberately moving from celebration towards activation.
“The Signature Edition” positions a signature as more than a name on a page. It becomes a symbol of participation, responsibility and the decision to have a voice in shaping what comes next.
The message is particularly directed at young South Africans.
Rather than seeing young people as passive inheritors of decisions made by previous generations, the Feather Awards is calling on them to become active participants in the country’s future.
Founder of the Feather Awards, Thami “Thami Dish” Willis, described the 2026 theme as both a personal and national challenge.
“We are 18. This is the age of signature – an age where the choices you make matter, and where your name becomes a binding pledge.”
Willis said the theme comes as South Africa’s youth face a difficult funding landscape, but stressed that the Feather Awards has never waited for permission to create space.
The 18th edition, he said, is about showing up, speaking plainly and adding one’s name to the future one wants.
From Funding Cuts To Community Action
The theme comes against the backdrop of severe United States foreign aid cuts that, according to the Feather Awards, have affected HIV programmes, youth employment initiatives and community-based health services relied upon by the LGBTQIA+ sector.
At the same time, South Africa is entering a critical local government election cycle, with youth participation remaining a concern.
The Feather Awards says it wants to use its platform to turn anxiety into agency and create space for difficult conversations that are often avoided.
That approach will extend beyond the awards ceremony itself.
The 2026 edition will expand the organisation’s year-round programming through workshops, mentorship circles and safe-space dialogues aimed at communities hardest hit by the funding shortfall.
With private-sector allies continuing to support the organisation despite economic pressures, the goal is for the awards to become more than a single night of celebration.
The ceremony is intended to serve as an ignition point for a sustained national conversation.
The Pride Flag Returns To Constitution Hill
One of the most significant moments surrounding Feather Awards 18 will be the annual hoisting of the Pride flag at Constitution Hill.
This year, the ceremony will be led by 18-year-old Chanel Diale, representing the next generation of queer activists, advocates and leaders.
The Pride flag will fly at the national landmark throughout Pride Month.
Constitution Hill is home to South Africa’s Constitutional Court and is a World Heritage Site. Its association with the Pride flag provides a prominent visual reminder of the country’s constitutional commitment to equality, dignity, inclusion and human rights.
Glamour Meets Advocacy
The Feather Awards has built its identity around a distinctive combination of glamour, visibility and advocacy, and the 18th edition will continue that tradition.
Familiar categories returning in 2026 include Diva Extraordinaire, Hunk of the Year, Cutest Couple and the Simon Nkoli Award.
New additions will also recognise youth-led movements, digital activism and grassroots organisers.
The organisation says nominees will be recognised not only for visibility, but also for their contribution towards a safer and more equitable South Africa.

At 18, The Signature Is Yours
The Feather Awards’ 18th edition ultimately places its milestone in the hands of the generation it wants to see more deeply involved in South Africa’s future.
Thami Dish closed the announcement with a direct message to young South Africans, pointing to the questions surrounding equality, resources and dignity.
“History will not wait for us to feel ready.”
The message behind The Signature Edition is clear: participation matters.
For the Feather Awards, 18 is not simply the age of celebration.
It is the age of making a mark.
Because a signature is more than a name. It is a promise. And at 18, the promise is yours to make.
