If confidence had a sound, it would be the bassline that shook 1 Fox Street this past weekend. The inaugural I Am Dark & Lovely Festival transformed Johannesburg’s inner city into a glowing celebration of Black beauty, culture, and unapologetic self-expression — and it was nothing short of magical.

Bringing together hundreds of Dark & Lovely fans, the festival became a radiant gathering of music lovers, trendsetters, and free spirits united by one message: Own your crown, live loud, and stay unapologetically Dark & Lovely.

Uncle Waffles Leads a Star-Studded Line-Up

Headlining the event, Uncle Waffles set the stage ablaze with her world-renowned amapiano energy — a performance that was both electric and empowering. Fans screamed, danced, and recorded every drop as she reminded the city why she’s one of Africa’s most celebrated DJs.

The line-up continued to deliver fire all day and night with Nasty C dropping bars that shook the crowd, Young Stunna bringing township rhythm to life, and Cassper Nyovest delivering his trademark energy. Kabza De Small, DJ Zinhle, Major League DJz, Mörda, and DJ Lag kept the decks hot, while Kamo Mphela and Zee Nxumalo added pure star power with their energetic performances. Rounding off the musical experience, Lelowhatsgood curated an unforgettable mix of local sounds and global cool.

Beauty, Vibes, and Brand Magic

Beyond the music, the I Am Dark & Lovely Festival was an experience built for beauty lovers and bold personalities. Guests were treated to exclusive goodie bags packed with festival essentials — including a glow-up cup (for those picture-perfect drinks), a bucket hat, fanny pack, shades, and a Dark & Lovely T-shirt — the ultimate statement of style and self-expression.

The festival also featured vibrant activation areas that kept guests engaged and glowing throughout the day. At the Maybelline booth, lucky fans received professional makeovers and face beats, while the Dark & Lovely zone offered product samples and the chance to win branded prizes. The Garnier hub brought an extra dose of fun, with interactive challenges and exclusive giveaways that had everyone smiling and snapping selfies.

Every corner pulsed with music, laughter, and confidence — proof that this was more than an event; it was a statement of pride and unity.

Dark & Lovely Speaks

“Dark & Lovely has always been a generational brand in all our homes and is now entering an era of living the iconic, cool, Mzansi brand that it is,” said Bongi Manqele, Brand Business Lead for Dark & Lovely.
“Dark & Lovely stands for confidence and empowerment. We celebrate every African hair type and want our consumers to proudly embrace their beauty. With the I Am Dark & Lovely Festival, we’re giving our people a place to express, connect and celebrate their crown.”

A Festival for the Culture

Supported by Shoprite/Checkers, Y, Maybelline, and Garnier, the I Am Dark & Lovely Festival was more than a party — it was a full-circle celebration of beauty, confidence, and Black excellence. Every hairstyle, every outfit, and every dance move told a story of self-love and community.

As the night came to a close, one thing was certain: the I Am Dark & Lovely Festival didn’t just debut — it defined what it means to shine boldly in your own skin.
