South Africa’s creative and media industries are mourning the loss of one of their most vibrant and beloved personalities following the passing of Maria McCloy at the age of 50.

In a statement released by the McCloy family, it was confirmed that Maria passed away on Tuesday evening, 12 May 2026, at Milpark Hospital following heart failure.

The news has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s entertainment, fashion and public relations circles, where McCloy had long been recognised as a dynamic creative force whose influence extended across multiple industries.

Remembered as a DJ, publicist and fashion designer, Maria McCloy built a career defined not only by talent and creativity, but by the warmth and humanity she brought into every room she entered.

A Life That Brought People Together

In their heartfelt statement, the McCloy family described Maria as a “vibrant and creative soul who embraced life wholeheartedly.”

It is a sentiment echoed by many who knew her personally and professionally.

Across decades in the entertainment and media landscape, McCloy became known for her ability to connect people, foster relationships and create spaces filled with laughter, compassion and authenticity.

Her impact extended far beyond professional accomplishments.

Friends, colleagues and members of the broader creative community have continued sharing tributes remembering her generosity, kindness and unwavering support for those around her.

According to the family, her presence brought “comfort, laughter and love” to everyone fortunate enough to know her.

A Respected Figure in South Africa’s Creative Industry

Maria McCloy occupied a unique space within South Africa’s media and fashion culture.

Whether behind the decks as a DJ, shaping narratives through public relations, or expressing creativity through fashion, she consistently embodied individuality and artistic passion.

Her career reflected the evolving spirit of South Africa’s entertainment industry — bold, expressive and deeply community-driven.

Over the years, McCloy became more than simply a media personality. She emerged as a respected cultural figure whose energy and creative vision left a lasting imprint on the people and industries she touched.

A Family Grieving an Immense Loss

Maria leaves behind her mother and her two sisters, Thandiwe McCloy and Natasha McCloy, alongside extended family members and countless friends devastated by her passing.

During what the family described as an “incredibly difficult and shocking time,” they have respectfully requested privacy as they process their grief.

The family also expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming outpouring of support, condolences and messages received since news of Maria’s passing became public.

Remembering a Legacy Beyond Headlines

The passing of Maria McCloy represents more than the loss of a public figure.

For many within South Africa’s creative industries, it marks the loss of a connector — someone who carried warmth into professional spaces often driven by pressure and performance.

Her legacy now lives on through the memories she created, the communities she nurtured and the countless lives she touched through her generosity and spirit.

Details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated by the family in due course.

For now, South Africa remembers Maria McCloy not only for the work she did, but for the humanity she carried with her everywhere she went.
