This Heritage Month, Pick n Pay Clothing and rising designer Alizwa Ngesipho Sibawu are weaving memory, identity, and craftsmanship into one extraordinary collaboration. Launching on 1 September 2025, the Pick n Pay Clothing X Alizwa Sibawu Futurewear Collection is more than fashion — it’s a bold celebration of South Africa’s stories stitched into fabric.

Honouring Heritage Through Fashion

In South Africa, clothing has always been more than what we wear. It has been a symbol of identity, pride, resistance, and celebration. From traditional garments to modern streetwear, fashion tells the stories of who we are and where we come from.

The new limited-edition Futurewear range does exactly that. With its mustard-yellow African prints, inspired by the golden hues of the Eastern Cape sun and motifs rooted in Xhosa heritage, the collection blends tradition with modern flair. The flowing, feminine silhouettes are versatile — easily tied, layered, or styled for day-to-night looks.

“I wanted the designs to capture the warmth and energy of the Transkei landscape,” says Sibawu. “Growing up, I watched my mother, Lindelwa, cutting patterns and sewing clothes at home. That’s where my love for fashion began.”

Alizwa Sibawu: From Local Roots to National Stage

Hailing from the Eastern Cape, Alizwa Sibawu turned his childhood passion for sewing into a career built on storytelling through design. His work reflects the duality of cultural pride and modern sophistication, making him one of South Africa’s most exciting young voices in fashion.

“Futurewear was never meant to be a runway alone,” says Gavin Rajah, co-founder of the Futurewear programme. “It is a working classroom and a real shop floor. Alizwa brings a clear point of view that honours place and people while creating clothes that live in the wardrobe, not a museum.”

Fashion as Culture, Fashion as Economy

South African fashion is more than an expression of culture — it is also a powerful economic driver. According to the South African Cultural Observatory, the fashion design sector contributes R1 billion to the national economy. Many of these designers are small to medium enterprises, and collaborations like this Futurewear partnership provide them with the exposure and platforms they need to thrive.

“On behalf of Alizwa, we are incredibly excited about what this collaboration means for his career,” says Hazel Pillay, Managing Executive for Pick n Pay Clothing. “Our Futurewear incubator programme is about giving South Africa’s rising stars a national stage, and Alizwa has created a collection that every customer can proudly wear.”

Where to Find the Collection

The Alizwa Sibawu X Pick n Pay Clothing Futurewear Collection will be available:

  • Online presales: from 28 August 2025 at www.pnpclothing.co.za

  • In select Pick n Pay Clothing stores nationwide: from 1 September 2025

Each garment is a piece of living heritage — a chance to wear South Africa’s stories while supporting proudly local design.

Why This Collection Matters

This collaboration is more than a fashion drop; it’s a conversation starter about heritage, sustainability, identity, and the business of African design. It bridges the past with the present, honouring tradition while embracing the freedom of modern African summers.

In every stitch lies a reminder: fashion isn’t just about style. It’s about history, community, and the power of storytelling. And this September, South Africans have the chance to wear their heritage with pride.
