Johannesburg is about to see fashion move in a completely different way.
For its AW27 Collections, South African Fashion Week is introducing two first-time collaborations that place dance and sport directly on the runway.
The collaborations will form part of SAFW’s AW27 programme at The Forum, Hyde Park Corner, Johannesburg, from 20 to 25 October 2026.
One will see Black Coffee and Joburg Ballet share the runway for the first time.
The other, Field to Fashion, will bring the language of sport into fashion through leading stylists and South African designers.
Both collaborations explore the same idea: fashion does not exist separately from culture.
It is already part of how people experience sport, dance and live events.
SAFW is now bringing those connections onto the runway.
When fashion starts moving
On 22 October, Black Coffee and Joburg Ballet will take to the runway together.
The latest collection by Jacques van der Watt will come alive through the bodies of Joburg Ballet’s artists in a performance conceived and choreographed by Naledi Award-winning choreographer and Joburg Ballet soloist Chloë Blair.
The runway becomes a stage.
The garment becomes movement.
And the dancer becomes both performer and muse.
The collaboration brings together Black Coffee’s distinctive language of form, structure and silhouette with the precision, strength and fluidity of ballet.
Every line, gesture and shape becomes part of the design.
The result is a living conversation between the architecture of the garment and the architecture of the body.
A first for Joburg Ballet
The collaboration also marks Joburg Ballet’s debut at South African Fashion Week.
It arrives during the company’s 25th anniversary year, adding another milestone to its celebration of dance and creative expression.
For Joburg Ballet Artistic Director Dane Hurst, the collaboration offers an opportunity to look at both ballet and fashion from a different perspective.
“This is more than a runway. It is an invitation to see ballet differently and to experience dance through the lens of fashion, and fashion through the body in motion.”
Hurst also highlights the broader connection between fashion, photography and movement.
Each offers a different way of seeing and understanding the human body, including its identity, culture, power and possibilities.
Sport gets runway ready
The movement does not stop with dance.
In the penultimate show of the season on 24 October, SAFW will bring sport onto the runway through Field to Fashion.
Sport has always had its own relationship with fashion.
Think about the arrival at the stadium.
The tunnel walk.
The post-match interview.
The stands.
These moments have become stages of their own, with what people wear helping shape style far beyond the ninety minutes of a match.
Field to Fashion takes that instinct and gives it to South African designers.
Leading stylists will create individual looks that bring personal style from the field into the fashion space.
It is a meeting of two worlds that already share a visual language.
Fashion, culture and opportunity
For Lucilla Booyzen, Founder of South African Fashion Week, the collaborations are about more than creating striking runway moments.
They are also about creating new opportunities for South African designers.
“We want to bring art and sport to the SAFW runway because fashion connects with both.”
Booyzen says the collaborations provide an opportunity to tell South African stories while presenting designers’ work in a different way.
They can also help designers broaden their reach, engage new audiences, create content and attract media attention.
The wider ambition is clear: create more interest in South African design, support sales and contribute to the growth of designers’ businesses.
That purpose sits at the heart of SAFW’s broader focus on moving South African designers towards sustainable businesses.
Two worlds. Infinite movement.
The AW27 Collections are positioning fashion as more than something worn.
It can move.
It can perform.
It can connect different audiences.
It can cross from the ballet stage to the sporting field and from culture into commerce.
With Joburg Ballet bringing movement to Jacques van der Watt’s collection on 22 October, followed by Field to Fashion on 24 October, SAFW is creating two new conversations between fashion and the worlds around it.
From the field to fashion, and from fashion to a world of opportunity, the AW27 Collections are ready to move.
