It’s a Family Affair: Comedy’s Biggest Night Returns with Star Power and Unfiltered Chaos

In every South African family, there’s a familiar cast of characters—the loud uncle, the brutally honest aunt, the cousin who shares too much, and the one person convinced they’re the funniest in the room.

This May, that beautifully chaotic dynamic takes centre stage at the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards, as the 13th edition returns with a theme that feels instantly relatable: “It’s a Family Affair.”

Set to take place on 2 May 2026 at Gold Reef City Lyric Theatre, this year’s awards promise more than just accolades—they deliver a full-blown comedy experience rooted in the shared language of family, culture, and connection.

At the Heart of the Family: The Goliaths

Leading the night are the unmistakable comedic force of the Goliath family—Jason Goliath, Donovan Goliath, Nicholas Goliath, and Kate Goliath.

As hosts, they embody the essence of the theme: playful roasting, sharp banter, and the kind of inside jokes that somehow feel universal. Their chemistry—honed over years of shared stages and real-life family dynamics—sets the tone for a night where nothing is off-limits and everything is funny.

Meet the Extended Comedy Family

No family gathering is complete without its larger-than-life personalities, and this year’s lineup delivers in full force.

Audiences can expect appearances from comedy heavyweights and rising stars including Tumi Morake, Lindi Johnson, Khanyisile Ngwenya, Mbali Gudazi, Summary, and the iconic duo Conrad Koch & Chester Missing.

And like any good family reunion, there’s always room for more—additional acts are expected to join the celebration.

Behind the Laughter: Crafting the Chaos

While the spotlight shines on stage, the real magic is carefully constructed behind the scenes.

This year’s script is helmed by comedy masterminds Mojak Lehoko and Camilo Saloojee, whose sharp wit and cultural insight promise a show packed with clever observations and laugh-out-loud moments.

Bringing it all together is performance director Jefferson Tshabalala, ensuring the night unfolds as a seamless, high-energy production that captures the unpredictability and brilliance of live comedy.

The Stakes: Comedy’s Coveted Crown

Beyond the laughter, the night carries real significance for the industry. With 12 award categories set to be revealed, South Africa’s top comedic talent will compete for the coveted Waldo trophy.

It’s a moment of recognition—but also of momentum. The awards have long played a critical role in elevating careers, opening doors to sold-out shows, corporate stages, and even international platforms.

A Legacy of Laughter

For Savanna Premium Cider, the awards represent more than sponsorship—they are a long-standing commitment to nurturing and celebrating the country’s comedy ecosystem.

“Savanna has always championed comedy in South Africa,” says Kayla Hendricks. “This is our way of shining a light on the talent, dedication, and brilliance of our comedians.”

Now in its 13th year, the awards continue to serve as a vital platform—spotlighting legends, supporting emerging voices, and strengthening an industry that thrives on storytelling and connection.

Join the Family

This is not just another awards show. It is a gathering—one filled with laughter, energy, and the kind of shared experience that only comedy can deliver.

Whether you come for the punchlines, the personalities, or the unpredictability, one thing is certain: no family meeting has ever been this entertaining.

Tickets are available now via Quicket.
