Once built as a holiday home for a former Miss South Africa, St James of Knysna has a rich history and a captivating charm that make it an intriguing destination. Transformed into a hotel in the 90s, it underwent another metamorphosis in 2017, evolving into a stunning, modern property that still retains its quaint countryside appeal.
The hotel’s clientele is primarily international, with a significant number of guests from Saudi Arabia, India, and Italy in the winter, and a mix from all around the world in the summertime. It’s easy to see why they are drawn to this enchanting place as the staff at St James are bright-eyed, exude warmth and a welcoming spirit that ensures your stay is as comfortable as possible.
The true ‘pièce de résistance’, however, are the rooms and their spectacular views. Situated directly on the picturesque banks of the Knysna Lagoon, the hotel offers breathtaking vistas across the water to the Knysna Heads. During my visit, I was fortunate to witness a full moon, spending hours watching the moonlight dancing on the lagoon. The rooms are luxurious and spacious, blending modern comforts with classic elegance. My room had a contemporary flair, while others, like the Lady Anne suite, evoked the timeless charm of Lake Como.
Knysna offers a plethora of activities, but as a water enthusiast, I was thrilled to sail to the Knysna Heads with Ocean Sailing Charters. Picture stunning views, the refreshing ocean breeze, charming ambiance, good music – ultimate relaxation. Whether or not you manage to pass the Heads for an ocean sail, the experience is always rewarding.
On day two, we opted for a leisurely beach walk at Buffels Bay, a pristine and untouched stretch of coastline just a short drive from Knysna. The beach, wrapped around dunes, provided a perfect setting for a meditative walk. This was followed by a champagne picnic aboard ‘The Boat’, a complimentary lagoon cruise for St James guests. The cruise revealed a hidden part of the lagoon, adding to its charm.
The day concluded with a nap and a delightful dinner at The Dry Dock in the Waterfront, where I of course had fresh oysters and the catch of the day, it just wouldn’t be Knysna without it. Sadly it’s back to Joburg for me but always a dream to arrive safely and stylishly in the new Ford Everest Platinum, I cannot recommend this car more for lond distance trips. Comfort, luxury and off road power, it literally has it all.
If you’re looking for a getaway for friends, a honeymoon, or just any special occasion, I highly recommend St James of Knysna, which has recently joined Cape Country Routes and with that a newly launched Loyalty Program.
