Vuma Champions Grassroots Sport as MFM Foundation School Sports Festival Celebrates Four Years of Youth Impact

Grassroots sport continues to prove its power to inspire, unite and transform communities, and this year the MFM Foundation School Sports Festival returns bigger than ever with the backing of Vuma.

Now in its fourth year, the festival has grown from a modest initiative involving just seven primary schools into a vibrant three-day sporting showcase featuring 32 schools—including 16 primary schools and 16 secondary schools—competing across netball, soccer and volleyball.

The remarkable growth reflects a shared commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for young South Africans to develop their sporting abilities, build confidence and strengthen community connections.

A Tournament Built on Opportunity

For Vuma, supporting the MFM Foundation School Sports Festival extends beyond the competition itself. The company’s involvement is rooted in investing in the communities where it operates and helping young people discover opportunities that reach far beyond the classroom.

As part of its support, Vuma has contributed to the tournament by providing:

  • Catering for participating athletes
  • Goodie bags
  • Sporting equipment, including balls

These contributions are designed to help create an enjoyable environment where young athletes can focus on participation, teamwork and personal development.

By partnering with community-driven initiatives like the MFM Foundation School Sports Festival, Vuma continues to support programmes that encourage young people to develop life skills while engaging in healthy competition.

Inspired by a Professional Football Journey

The festival was founded by professional footballer Fortune Makaringe, whose own journey through South African football inspired him to create structured opportunities for the next generation.

Through the MFM Foundation, Makaringe encourages young people to pursue both education and sport, believing the two should work hand in hand in shaping future success.

Hosting the festival in his hometown has created more than a sporting event. It has become a community celebration where parents gather to support their children, schools compete with pride, and young people are encouraged to dream beyond their current circumstances.

“For us, it’s about inspiring young people to believe in what’s possible,” says Makaringe. “If we can contribute to even one child’s journey and help them see their potential, then we are making a meaningful difference.”

Four Years of Remarkable Growth

The expansion of the tournament tells its own story.

What started with just seven primary schools has evolved into a structured three-day event involving 32 participating schools, creating significantly more opportunities for learners to compete, learn and grow through sport.

The increasing participation demonstrates the value communities place on youth development and the role organised sport plays in nurturing future talent.

“The growth of this tournament speaks for itself; it has become a powerful platform for young talent and a real driver of community impact,” said Katlego Magatu, Chairperson of the Vosloorus Primary Schools Association.

Building Stronger Communities Through Sport

While trophies and medals remain an exciting part of the competition, the festival’s greatest achievement lies in bringing people together.

Families, educators, coaches and community members unite around a common goal: supporting young people as they build confidence, discipline and teamwork through sport.

For Vuma, this aligns closely with its broader commitment to community development by supporting initiatives that create lasting opportunities for future generations.

The company believes grassroots programmes like the MFM Foundation School Sports Festival play an important role in helping young South Africans develop valuable skills that extend well beyond the sporting arena.

Looking Ahead

As the MFM Foundation School Sports Festival enters its fourth year, its vision continues to expand.

With participation growing each year, the ambition remains clear: reach more schools, create more opportunities and inspire more young people to believe in their potential.

By combining community support, education and sport, the festival continues to build a platform where tomorrow’s leaders and athletes can take their first steps toward brighter futures.
