That idea sits at the heart of “9/11 Reunited,” a new three-part National Geographic docuseries that revisits the September 11 attacks through the people who lived through them — and the extraordinary connections formed in the middle of unimaginable chaos.
The series premieres on National Geographic Channel in South Africa on Tuesday, 25 August at 20:30, with all three episodes airing back-to-back. It will also be available to stream on Disney+ in South Africa.
Rather than focusing only on the events of September 11, “9/11 Reunited” turns its attention to something deeply human: the strangers, rescuers and everyday heroes whose actions changed the lives of others forever.

25 years later, the reunions begin
Created in collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the series comes from the Emmy®-winning team at 72 Films.
Across three episodes, survivors, first responders and witnesses reunite with the people who helped them during the attacks.
For many, it will be the first time they have seen each other in 25 years.
These meetings create an opportunity to revisit moments that have remained vivid for decades. They also allow those involved to ask questions that may have gone unanswered, express gratitude and reflect on how a single day reshaped their lives.
The result is a story about more than tragedy.
It is about connection.
It is about courage.
And it is about the people who stepped forward when everything around them was falling apart.
When strangers became part of each other’s stories
The September 11 attacks remain the deadliest terrorist attacks in U.S. history.
But within the devastating events were countless individual stories of bravery and human connection.
“9/11 Reunited” brings some of those stories back into focus.
Survivors meet the rescuers who helped them.
Witnesses reconnect with strangers who played unexpected roles in their survival.
Every reunion carries its own history. Every conversation offers a chance to look back at an experience that has remained part of someone’s life for a quarter of a century.
The passage of time does not erase those memories. Instead, the series explores what happens when the people connected by those memories finally meet again.
A story told beyond the screen
National Geographic is extending the project beyond television with a major digital experience planned for early September.
The experience will feature an expansive video archive containing never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews and original source material drawn from National Geographic’s acclaimed collection of 9/11 documentaries.
The searchable archive will be available through NatGeo.com, giving audiences the opportunity to explore eyewitness testimony and the lasting aftermath of September 11 from multiple perspectives.
It will combine firsthand accounts with historical context, allowing viewers to explore the story beyond the three episodes of the docuseries.
The 17 minutes that changed history
The digital experience will also feature a companion story from 9/11 historian Garrett M. Graff.
The feature will examine the pivotal 17 minutes between the first and second plane impacts at the World Trade Center.
Through a detailed, minute-by-minute account, the feature will provide additional context surrounding one of the defining moments of September 11.
It adds another layer to National Geographic’s broader effort to document the human and historical dimensions of the attacks.
Remembering through light
The digital project will conclude with another powerful element.
National Geographic, together with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, will publish original reportage on the annual “Tribute in Light” public art installation held on September 11.
This year’s installation will be captured through exclusive photography by renowned architectural photographer Christopher Payne.
The images will add a visual dimension to an experience that has become part of the annual remembrance of September 11.
