As the world pivots toward cleaner, smarter, and more intentional living, consumers are voting with their wallets — and they’re choosing transparency, taste, and transformation. Enter the rise of Modern Refreshment: a fast-growing beverage movement defined by real ingredients, clean labels, and authentic flavour.

According to Circana/IRI data (52 weeks ending 29 Dec 2024), this new category has exploded — surging over 50% in growth and generating $203 million in new revenue, jumping from $400 million to $603 million in just 12 months. One brand at the heart of this evolution? PURA Beverages.

🧃 Back to the Future — With Purpose

On Friday, 18 July, PURA Beverages officially unlocked the next chapter in its global refresh journey. The scene? An exclusive brand showcase hosted at Checkers Head Office in Johannesburg, headlined by beloved comedian Chris Forrest and attended by South Africa’s top retail stakeholders.

This wasn’t your typical product launch — it was a bold statement of intent.

Led by PURA CEO Greig Jansen, the brand unveiled a completely reimagined visual identity and packaging system for its PURA Soda, PURA Kids, and PURA Hydrate ranges. These changes aren’t just skin deep. They represent a retail-first innovation strategy, designed to meet the needs of today’s health-conscious, design-aware, ingredient-savvy consumer.

🎯 Why It Matters

“Relevance requires reinvention,” said Greig Jansen during the unveiling. “This isn’t just about looking fresh — it’s about owning the Modern Refreshment space and delivering a retail experience that informs, delights, and converts.”

From fruit-forward flavour cues to cleaner, colour-blocked layouts, the new design system is precision-crafted to stand out on shelf, guide consumer choice, and support shopper engagement in busy retail environments.

Retail feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with Checkers’ category teams praising the clarity, confidence, and category leadership the new packaging delivers.

🔓 A Moment of Unlocking

At the entrance to the event stood a symbolic PURA installation — a locked gateway to the brand’s new era. With a ceremonial key turn, the door opened and revealed a vibrant world of Modern Refreshment, complete with immersive storytelling, product tastings, and behind-the-scenes design insights developed in collaboration with top-tier US studios.

The event brought together data, design, and retail strategy — showing how PURA isn’t just keeping pace with trends but actively shaping the future of better-for-you beverages.

🌍 Global Vision, South African Soul

Comedian Chris Forrest added a dose of local flavour with humour that matched PURA’s authentic South African roots. This marriage of global ambition with local relatability is what keeps PURA fresh, relevant, and real — no matter the shelf, shopper, or country.

👀 What’s Next?

As Modern Refreshment continues its rapid rise, PURA’s refreshed brand world positions it at the forefront of a global shift. One that values integrity over additives, innovation over imitation, and purpose over plastic promises.
