In the world of ballet, every grand performance begins long before the curtain rises. It starts in rehearsal studios filled with discipline, determination and dreams quietly taking shape at the barre. This June, some of Gauteng’s most promising young dancers will step into the spotlight as the Joburg Ballet Academy presents its highly anticipated Debut Dancer Bursary Award 2026 at the Roodepoort Theatre.
Set to take place on Friday 5 June and Saturday 6 June 2026, the annual showcase has become an important platform for identifying and nurturing the next generation of South African ballet talent. More than a competition, the event represents a celebration of artistry, mentorship and the future of classical dance in the country.
This year’s presentation will feature 10 finalists, selected through an open audition process for ballet dancers aged 13 to 14 from private studios across Gauteng. The finalists come from a range of training backgrounds including RAD, Cecchetti and other recognised ballet methods, reflecting the diversity and depth of South Africa’s developing dance landscape.
Under the guidance of former Joburg Ballet principal dancer Anya Carstens, the finalists will participate in a curated ballet class with live piano accompaniment before performing classical variations on stage. The winner of the Debut Dancer Bursary 2026 will be announced during the final performance on Saturday evening.
A Celebration of Excellence in South African Dance
Adding further prestige to the event is an esteemed judging panel comprising Gail Myburgh, National Chair of the Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa; Olivia Lume, National Director of Africa for the Royal Academy of Dance; and Revil Yon, principal dancer at Joburg Ballet.
Beyond the competition itself, audiences can expect a richly curated programme celebrating both classical and contemporary dance.
Among the featured performances will be an extract from the beloved classical ballet Paquita, staged by Monier Javier, alongside a new contemporary work titled Hope, choreographed by Roseline Wilkens. The piece explores optimism and resilience through movement, embodying the emotional complexity that contemporary ballet increasingly embraces.
The programme also includes a lively rendition of Oliver Twist performed by the Joburg Junior Ballet. Guest artists Nigel Hannah and Jan Venter will appear as Fagin and Mr Bumble respectively, in a production choreographed by Jo Stoller, Tracey McNiven and Christine Sheperd.
In a meaningful nod to collaboration within the local dance community, teachers whose students currently train at the academy have also been invited to showcase work during the event. Featured studios include those led by Karen Beukes, Vanessa Eberol and Natasha Ireland.
Building the Future of South African Ballet

The Debut Dancer Bursary Award forms part of the academy’s broader mission to create meaningful professional pathways for young dancers. Through advanced training, ensemble work and mentorship from experienced industry professionals, the academy continues to bridge the gap between private dance education and the professional stage.
The academy also maintains a close working relationship with Joburg Ballet, with academy dancers frequently augmenting the professional company’s corps de ballet productions.
Support from the South African Ballet Theatre Trust, chaired by Joburg Ballet honorary Life Patron Annzie Hancock, continues to play a vital role in sustaining the academy’s development initiatives and bursary opportunities.
Behind the scenes, the academy is led by a respected team of former professional dancers and educators including Burnise Silvius, Jenny Barlow, Nicole Ferreira-Dill and Iain MacDonald.
For audiences, the weekend promises more than technical brilliance. It offers a glimpse into the future of South African ballet — a future shaped by discipline, artistry and young dancers stepping courageously toward their moment under the lights.
