The race to South Africa’s biggest mall-based gaming finals has officially begun, and Rosebank Mall wasted no time setting the competitive benchmark for the 2026 MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience.

Over three action-packed days, gamers from across Gauteng descended on Rosebank Mall to compete in a variety of esports and gaming challenges, from high-pressure EA FC 26™ matches and Beat Saber showdowns to fighting game tournaments and fast-paced hardware competitions. With a share of a substantial R350,000 prize pool up for grabs across the national series, competitors arrived with one goal in mind: securing their place among the country’s elite gamers.

Now entering its fourth year, the MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience has grown into one of South Africa’s most exciting gaming events, combining esports competition, entertainment and community engagement inside some of the country’s leading shopping destinations.

EA FC 26™ Competition Delivers Early Drama

The spotlight throughout the weekend fell firmly on the EA FC 26™ tournament, where players battled for local honours and an opportunity to advance to the prestigious National Football Final scheduled for 30 August at Canal Walk.

After a series of intense fixtures, 24-year-old Imraan Williams emerged victorious, claiming the Rosebank Mall Final title. His victory earned him a R2,500 Rosebank Mall gift card and, more importantly, a direct qualification spot in the National Football Final.

Lamdile Mthiyane secured second place and a R1,500 gift card, while Zahir Ahmed Patel completed the podium positions with a R1,000 gift card prize.

For Williams, the victory means an opportunity to compete against the nation’s best EA FC players later this year, where a share of the national prize pool awaits.

Beat Saber Champion Books National Finals Spot

The immersive virtual reality rhythm game Beat Saber once again proved popular among competitors.

Nineteen-year-old Orwin de Beer from Centurion delivered the highest score recorded during the three-day event, securing a R1,000 Rosebank Mall gift card and a coveted place in the Beat Saber National Final scheduled for 20 September.

His performance established an early benchmark for competitors still preparing to qualify at upcoming events across the country.

Fighting Cup Brings Out South Africa’s Best Competitors

The Fighting Cup tournament showcased skill, strategy and lightning-fast reactions across multiple fighting game titles.

Friday’s Brawlhalla competition saw Jaden Devlal take top honours ahead of runner-up Amro Ahmed.

Saturday shifted focus to Tekken, where Tebogo Dhlamini battled his way to first place, while Sherwynne Steyn secured second position.

The weekend concluded with Street Fighter 6 on Sunday, where Hlulani Ndlovu emerged victorious ahead of Tiyani Nkuna.

The Fighting Cup continues to attract some of South Africa’s most dedicated competitive gamers, highlighting the depth of local fighting game talent.

Speed, Precision and Mechanical Skill on Display

Beyond traditional esports titles, competitors also tested themselves in unique challenges throughout the weekend.

The Fastest Lap competition rewarded Yasheen Govind, Kamogelo Ntseare and Jonathan Ackerman on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively, each claiming a R1,000 Rosebank Mall gift card.

Meanwhile, the increasingly popular Keyboard Rebuild Race challenged participants to demonstrate technical speed and accuracy. Lesego Mosikare claimed Friday’s victory while Bongani Nxumalo emerged victorious on Sunday.

These challenges continue to add a distinctive flavour to the MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience, blending gaming culture with practical technical skills and interactive entertainment.

A National Esports Journey Continues

The Rosebank event may have launched the season, but the competition is only just beginning.

The MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience now moves to Woodlands in Pretoria before continuing its nationwide journey through several major shopping centres. Qualifiers and mall events will take place at Woodlands, The Glen, Table Bay Mall, Clearwater, Capegate and Canal Walk, where the national finals will ultimately crown South Africa’s top competitors.

With significant prize money still available and national championship places still up for grabs, the pressure is only set to intensify as the series progresses.

As competitive gaming continues to grow in South Africa, the MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience remains one of the country’s most important grassroots esports platforms, creating opportunities for players to compete, connect and showcase their skills on a national stage.

For the winners in Rosebank, the journey to the national finals has already begun. For everyone else, the next opportunity awaits.
