Nearly five decades after the youth of 1976 changed the course of South African history, a new generation is preparing to gather at Constitution Hill to celebrate freedom, creativity and the power of young voices.

The 14th edition of the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival is set to transform Johannesburg’s historic Constitution Hill precinct into a vibrant hub of music, art, entrepreneurship, film, poetry and dialogue. More than just a festival, Basha Uhuru stands as a living tribute to the young people who fought for the freedom to choose on June 16, 1976.

This year’s programme promises an unforgettable celebration of culture and creativity while encouraging meaningful conversations about the future of South Africa’s youth.

A Festival Rooted in Legacy

Basha Uhuru is the culmination of Constitution Hill’s year-round Creative Uprising Programme, an initiative dedicated to nurturing talent, supporting local creators and driving innovation within the creative economy.

At the heart of the festival are the artists, designers and makers who call Constitution Hill’s Creative Hub home. With more than 50 creative studios operating on-site, visitors will have the opportunity to engage directly with local talent, discover unique products and support South African entrepreneurs through the festival’s vibrant marketplace.

It is a celebration of creativity with real economic impact.

Sounds of Freedom Takes Centre Stage

Music will once again be one of the festival’s biggest attractions.

The highly anticipated Sounds of Freedom Music Festival takes place on Saturday, 27 June, at People’s Park, Constitution Hill, from 10am.

This year’s lineup bridges generations of South African music lovers.

Headliners include Nasty C, Zee Nxumalo, DJ Tira, Bucie and DJ Cleo. They will be joined by legendary hip-hop pioneers Skwatta Kamp, whose influence on South African music continues to resonate with audiences today.

The main stage will also feature performances from Lia Butler, Osmic, Teedo Love, Atmos Blaq x Maline Aura, HitBossSA, Sipho Alphi Mkhwanazi, Umzulu Phaqa, Vuyo Viwe, Ndumiso Beloved and many more emerging and established artists.

From hip-hop and amapiano to house and Afro-soul, the festival promises a soundtrack that reflects South Africa’s rich musical landscape.

Honouring Icons Who Shaped Creative Freedom

One of the festival’s most anticipated moments will be the presentation of the Basha Uhuru Legacy Award.

This year’s honour goes to the legendary South African hip-hop collective Skwatta Kamp.

The award recognises artists whose work has championed creative freedom and helped shape South Africa’s cultural identity. Previous recipients include Mandla Spikiri, Thebe, Alaska and 2025 honourees Boom Shaka.

The festival will also unveil a special mural celebrating the life and legacy of Maria McCloy, the acclaimed designer, publicist and creative force who played a significant role in supporting Basha Uhuru over the years.

Created by acclaimed artist Lazi Mathebula, the mural will stand alongside the tribute to music legend Bra Hugh Masekela on the public-facing mural wall along Joubert Street, creating a permanent reminder of McCloy’s contribution to South Africa’s creative industries.

A Marketplace of Local Innovation

Visitors can also immerse themselves in the Curated Makers Market, a showcase of local entrepreneurship and creativity.

The market will feature urban fashion, jewellery, handmade crafts, agro-processing products, wellness and healing goods, and a variety of locally produced items.

Food lovers can enjoy some of Johannesburg’s favourite food stalls, while visitors can explore exhibitions, pop-up activations and creative experiences.

One of the crowd favourites will once again be the opportunity to have a live portrait drawn by the famous Rasta the Artist.

Conversations That Shape the Future

Beyond the entertainment, Basha Uhuru remains deeply committed to education, empowerment and civic engagement.

The Creative Conference begins on 24 June with the Youth Summit on the Hill, a flagship two-day gathering hosted by WeThePeopleSA in partnership with Constitution Hill Development Company and the Seth Mazibuko Foundation.

The summit will bring together more than 100 young leaders, activists, students, learners and educators.

Powerful speakers include Soweto Uprising leader Seth Mazibuko, Constitutional Court Judge Justice Kollapen, Acting Constitutional Court Judge Justice Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, SAHRC Commissioner Tshepo Madlingozi, Junior Mayor of Johannesburg Kamo Malikane, Section 27, The GBV Respond Fund and several civil society organisations.

Positioned immediately after June 16 commemorations, the summit aims to move beyond remembrance and into action by encouraging constitutional literacy, civic participation and youth leadership.

Learning, Film and Poetry for a New Generation

Festivalgoers can also attend a range of free programmes by registering online.

Highlights include Iqhawe Magazine’s Back to the Future Conference, which explores the heritage of June 16 through intergenerational dialogue and creative engagement.

Emerging musicians can participate in a Music Masterclass hosted by Groove Academy, SAMRO, SAMPRA and music industry experts focused on transforming talent into sustainable income.

Film enthusiasts can experience the Visions of Freedom Film Festival, showcasing locally produced films that reflect South African stories and perspectives.

Live theatre takes centre stage with THE UPRISING – 50 YEARS ON: ALUTA MUST NOT CONTINUE June 1976 – June 2026, produced by Masingita Masunga.

Poetry lovers will be inspired by Words of Freedom, a showcase curated by WordUp that brings together some of South Africa’s most influential spoken-word artists, including Mak Manaka, Standard Bank Young Artist for Poetry Modise Sekgothe and former World Slam Champion Xabiso Vili.

Together, these artists continue the tradition of using poetry as a powerful tool for resistance, reflection and social change.

More Than a Festival

For Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Rural Development Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, Basha Uhuru represents something bigger than entertainment.

“Basha Uhuru is more than a festival – it is a celebration of the power, resilience and imagination of South Africa’s youth.”

Her sentiment reflects the festival’s broader mission: creating opportunities for young people to develop their talents, express themselves and contribute meaningfully to the country’s growing creative economy.

Joburg Tourism also views the festival as a powerful platform for showcasing Johannesburg as a destination where culture, creativity and heritage drive economic growth.

As thousands prepare to descend on Constitution Hill, Basha Uhuru 2026 is once again proving why it remains one of South Africa’s most important celebrations of youth empowerment, creative freedom and cultural expression.

Nearly 50 years after the events of June 16, the spirit of courage, activism and hope remains alive — not only in remembrance, but in every song, artwork, performance and conversation that takes place at Basha Uhuru.
