When the 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge in honour of Gary Player returns to Sun City this December, players will face the most significant transformation in the tournament’s history — while spectators can expect an even bigger experience away from the course.

The Gary Player Country Club has undergone its largest course transformation since the tournament began, introducing a completely new opening hole, a dedicated practice range and several other changes designed to create a fresh championship test.

At the same time, Sun City is expanding tournament week with four nights of entertainment, dining and resort experiences.

The result is a Nedbank Golf Challenge that promises to deliver both on and off the course.

A New Opening Hole Changes Everything

The biggest change is impossible to miss.

The Gary Player Country Club now has an entirely new 470-metre par-four 1st hole, built parallel to the original and climbing higher up the mountainside.

It is the most significant single alteration to the course in the tournament’s history.

And the transformation does not simply create a new challenge for the world’s best golfers.

The site of the original first hole will become the course’s first dedicated practice range.

That means players will arrive at a very different opening tee this December — and spectators will experience a transformed part of a course that has been central to the Nedbank Golf Challenge since 1981.

More Changes Across the Course

The new 1st hole is only part of the transformation.

The course has also received new professional tees and refurbished bunkers, while the dam on the 2nd hole has been enlarged.

There is also a newly opened view of the waterfall from the 9th hole.

Together, the changes are intended to sharpen the championship challenge while retaining the character and tournament pedigree that have made the Gary Player Country Club synonymous with “Africa’s Major”.

For players, that means adapting to a course they may know well — but no longer quite as they remember it.

A Serious Opening Field

The first five names confirmed for December immediately raise the stakes.

Justin Rose, Bryson DeChambeau, South Africa’s Casey Jarvis, defending champion Kristoffer Reitan and Marco Penge will form the opening group of a field that will be expanded with further player announcements.

Rose returns to Sun City after finishing runner-up in 2007.

DeChambeau brings major championship pedigree to the opening field.

South African fans will have a homegrown player to get behind in Casey Jarvis, who arrives after recording back-to-back DP World Tour victories this season.

Then there is defending champion Kristoffer Reitan, who returns with the pressure — and opportunity — of trying to successfully defend his title.

Rounding out the first announcement is Marco Penge, winner of The Seve Ballesteros Players’ Player of the Year Award for 2025.

It is an opening line-up that gives the 2026 tournament serious international weight before the rest of the field is even revealed.

The Golf Still Comes First

Despite the changes around the tournament, championship golf remains at the heart of the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

But Sun City wants visitors to stay long after the final putt.

The resort is expanding its tournament-week programme to create a destination experience that moves seamlessly from golf into food, music and nightlife.

“The Nedbank Golf Challenge has always been one of the highlights of the Sun City calendar, and the golf remains the main attraction,” says Brett Hoppe, Resort General Manager at Sun City.

“The changes to the Gary Player Country Club give the world’s best players a new challenge, while the expanded programme across the resort gives spectators more reasons to stay longer and experience everything Sun City has to offer once play has finished.”

And that is where the 2026 edition is looking to distinguish itself.

The Golf Finishes. The Party Doesn’t.

Four nights of headline entertainment are planned during tournament week.

The programme includes a +LIVE+ Concert at the Superbowl on Saturday, 5 December, followed by The Final Putt! with Scorpion Kings and DJ Shimza at Sun Park on Sunday, 6 December.

The expanded resort programme is designed to complement the golf, giving visitors more opportunities to build an entire Sun City getaway around the tournament.

It means the day does not have to end when the golfers leave the 18th green.

Visitors can move from the fairways into dining experiences, live music and nightlife without leaving the destination.

Four Decades of “Africa’s Major”

The 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge will be the 44th edition of the tournament.

Its history stretches back to 1981, when American golfer Johnny Miller became the inaugural champion.

Among the five players who competed in that first event was Gary Player, whose legacy continues to be honoured through the tournament today.

Over more than four decades, the Nedbank Golf Challenge has brought some of the game’s greatest players to Sun City and established itself as one of the most recognisable international golf events on the African continent.

The 2026 edition builds on that heritage while introducing a significantly transformed championship venue.

Sun City Is Calling

The 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge in honour of Gary Player takes place at Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, from Thursday, 3 December to Sunday, 6 December 2026.

Tickets and hospitality packages go on sale 18 August, with options ranging from general admission to premium Hospitali-TEE experiences.

General admission includes access to Sun City and the Gary Player Country Club Golf Course, general grandstand seating, the practice range and Hospitality Village.

Adults can also bring up to two children under 18 for complimentary entry per adult ticket.

With a transformed course, an opening field packed with major talent and an entertainment programme designed to keep the destination alive after play, the message from Sun City is clear.

This December, you can come for the golf.

But there will be plenty of reasons to stay.
