Art will take centre stage in Plettenberg Bay this spring as the Plettenberg Bay Arts Association (PAA) brings two distinctly different exhibition experiences to the Plett ARTS Festival 2026, running from 25 September to 4 October 2026.
Rather than placing every artist and creative discipline under one roof, PAA has created two separate spaces with two very different personalities.
The White House Collection will offer a carefully curated gallery-style experience, while Community Canvas will open the doors to a broader creative community through exhibitions, workshops, live demonstrations and creative businesses.
Together, the exhibitions will showcase the depth and diversity of South African art while creating opportunities for artists to connect with audiences, buyers and fellow creatives.
Two Spaces. Two Ways to Experience Art.
The contrast is deliberate.
At The White House Theatre, The White House Collection will present a refined selection of South African artists chosen through an independent curatorial process.
Meanwhile, Plett Community Hall will become the home of Community Canvas — a more open and interactive environment where artists, makers, suppliers, workshop facilitators and creative businesses can share their work and skills.
For festival visitors, that means the opportunity to experience art in more than one way.
One venue invites you to slow down, look closely and discover collectible works.
The other encourages you to engage, learn, watch artists create and become part of the creative process.
The White House Collection
The White House Collection is being hosted at The White House Theatre and will feature artists selected by an independent panel comprising Barbara Lenhard, art advisor and curator; Elize Bezuidenhout, fine artist and art teacher; and established South African artist Dallas Smith.
Applications for the exhibition have closed, with portfolios from 54 artists now being considered by the panel.
The curated exhibition is intended to create a sophisticated setting where visitors can discover and purchase high-quality, collectable South African art.
It also gives selected artists an opportunity to place their work directly in front of residents, visitors and art buyers from Plettenberg Bay and further afield.
The emphasis is therefore not only on viewing art, but on creating meaningful opportunities for artists to present and sell their work.
Community Canvas Opens the Door Wider
Then there is Community Canvas.
Hosted at Plett Community Hall, the exhibition will take a more inclusive and energetic approach.
The concept brings together artists at different stages of their creative journeys alongside makers, art suppliers and creative businesses.
But visitors will not simply walk into a room filled with finished artworks.
Community Canvas will also feature workshops and live demonstrations, giving audiences the chance to watch artists and creatives at work, learn new skills and interact directly with Plett’s creative community.
It is this hands-on element that sets Community Canvas apart.
The experience is designed to make creativity something visitors can engage with rather than simply observe.
Space for Creatives at Every Stage
Community Canvas will offer participating artists several display options, depending on their needs and availability.
These include smaller spaces suitable for a few easels or a small table, standard display spaces, as well as options for larger wall-hung works or sculptures.
The opportunity is open to artists, makers, creative businesses, art suppliers, workshop facilitators and demonstrators interested in becoming part of the festival’s creative programme.
However, there is a deadline.
Bookings for Community Canvas close on 6 September 2026.
Those interested in participating are encouraged to submit their applications before the closing date.
A Festival Built Around Creative Connection
For the Plettenberg Bay Arts Association, bringing the two exhibitions together is about more than filling two venues.
It is about reflecting the breadth of the creative community itself.
“Our two exhibitions have deliberately been created to offer very different experiences,” says Madeline Hoban, Community Liaison Board Member of the Plettenberg Bay Arts Association.
“The White House Collection gives us an opportunity to present a curated body of work in a beautiful setting, while Community Canvas is about opening the doors as widely as possible and creating a lively space where artists and the public can connect. Together, they really demonstrate the wonderful diversity of our creative community.”
That diversity is set to become one of the defining features of Plett ARTS Festival 2026.
From carefully selected artworks to hands-on workshops and live creative demonstrations, the programme is designed to create space for different artistic voices and different ways of experiencing creativity.
Plett Gets Ready for an Artistic Spring
With the wider Plett arts community coming together for this year’s festival, the Plettenberg Bay Arts Association says it is looking forward to contributing to the programme and, most importantly, creating meaningful opportunities for artists to show and sell their work.
More details will be revealed in the lead-up to the festival, including participating artists, workshops, demonstrations and further exhibition programme information.
For visitors, the promise is clear: two venues, two very different experiences and one celebration of the creative energy flowing through Plettenberg Bay.
Whether you are looking to discover your next piece of South African art, meet local creatives, learn something new or simply immerse yourself in the arts, Plett ARTS Festival 2026 is preparing to make creativity impossible to ignore.
