RoadCover Brings the RAF Claims Journey to Life

A road accident can happen in seconds.

What follows can last for months or even years.

The crash itself may make the headlines, but the difficult journey that comes afterwards often receives far less attention.

That was the story RoadCover wanted to change at its recent media event at its headquarters in Randburg, Johannesburg.

Through a series of staged scenes, the company brought the Road Accident Fund (RAF) claims journey to life, showing journalists what can happen after a motor vehicle accident, what goes into reaching a settlement and why the amount a claimant ultimately keeps can matter as much as the settlement awarded.

At the centre of the experience was not paperwork or legal terminology.

It was the person behind the claim.

Someone whose life may have changed in an instant. Someone who may no longer be able to earn an income. And a family suddenly facing an uncertain future.

“For many people, a road accident is only the beginning of the trauma,” says Amanda Rogaly, CEO of RoadCover.

“Then come the questions: How will I earn a living? What happens to my family? Where do I start with a claim?”

With the event, Rogaly says RoadCover wanted the media to see “the person behind the paperwork”.

The Settlement Number Is Not the Whole Story

A successful RAF claim can result in a significant settlement.

But RoadCover says there is another question that deserves attention:

How much of that settlement actually reaches the claimant?

For an injured person or grieving family, compensation may become an important part of rebuilding life after an accident.

Yet fees and expenses deducted from a settlement can reduce the amount ultimately available to the claimant.

RoadCover’s membership model starts at R29 per month.

According to the company, no fees or expenses are deducted from a successful member’s RAF settlement under its model.

That means the claimant receives 100% of the settlement.

RoadCover supports a broad range of road users who may have a valid RAF claim following an accident, including passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, provided they meet the relevant requirements.

“A settlement is money someone may need to live on, support their children or rebuild their future,” says Rogaly.

“That is why keeping every rand matters.”

For RoadCover, the goal is for members to focus on recovery while the company manages their qualifying RAF claim from start to finish.

Turning a Complex Process Into a Human Story

The staged experience was designed to make an unfamiliar process easier to understand.

Rather than simply explaining the RAF claims journey on paper, RoadCover recreated elements of what can happen after an accident.

The experience explored the claims process, the settlement and RoadCover’s role along the way.

It also highlighted consequences that can extend far beyond the initial crash.

An accident can disrupt a person’s ability to earn an income.

It can place pressure on families.

And for someone unfamiliar with the claims process, navigating what comes next can add another layer of uncertainty.

RoadCover says this is why understanding what happens after an accident is an essential part of understanding its impact.

Importantly, RoadCover is not an insurer and does not determine RAF awards.

Its role is to manage qualifying RAF claims on behalf of its members and handle the process.

21 Years of RoadCover

RoadCover’s story began with a personal experience.

The company was founded 21 years ago by Eugene Beck, after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle.

Today, Beck serves as RoadCover’s Founder and Executive Chairman.

According to Beck, RoadCover has secured more than R840 million in RAF settlements over the past seven years alone, helping more than 6,000 people.

The company estimates that its model has kept R336 million in the hands of claimants and their families — money that could otherwise have been deducted for fees and expenses.

That money, RoadCover says, remains available to support households and communities across South Africa.

“Behind every settlement is a person whose life has changed and a family trying to move forward,” says Beck.

He says he founded RoadCover because of the belief that compensation intended to help rebuild people’s lives should remain with the people to whom it was awarded.

“Twenty one years later, that purpose remains at the heart of everything we do.”

Support Beyond the Claims Process

For RoadCover, supporting accident victims does not stop when a claim is managed.

Its work also extends through the RoadCover Care Foundation.

The Foundation was established to provide practical assistance to accident victims who may fall outside traditional funding structures or need additional support during recovery.

That support can include items and assistance related to mobility aids, rehabilitation, transportation, education and longer-term care.

Rogaly says receiving a settlement does not necessarily mark the end of someone’s journey.

For many accident victims, she explains, it can be the point where the difficult work of recovery begins.

Recovery may take months or years, while the effects of an accident can extend across an entire family.

The Foundation gives RoadCover an avenue to provide practical assistance where it can.

From Awareness to Action

RoadCover’s media event ultimately aimed to start a broader conversation about what happens after a road accident.

That includes understanding road-user rights, claims agreements and the financial consequences of settlement deductions.

The crash may last seconds.

The consequences can last much longer.

And for people navigating an RAF claim, understanding the process can be an important part of understanding what comes next.

“We cannot undo an accident,” says Rogaly.

“But we can take care of the claims journey and ensure that no fees or expenses are deducted from a successful member’s settlement.”

For RoadCover, that is the difference it wants to highlight as it marks 21 years in business.

The company says its latest chapter is about both reflection and looking forward — but its stated purpose remains centred on the people behind the claims.

Because once the headlines fade and the crash scene is cleared, the real journey may only just be beginning.
