Acclaimed stand-up comedian, producer and ukulele-wielding podcaster Phil de Lange is heading to the world’s biggest arts festival — but he’s calling on fans, comedy lovers, and supporters of local talent to help make it happen. His latest solo show, The Phil Monty, has been officially selected for the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and he’s launched a crowdfunding campaign via Thundafund to raise the funds needed to get there.

The Phil Monty is a hilarious and heartfelt blend of stand-up and musical comedy that dives deep into masculinity, mental health, and personal growth — all served with Phil’s signature mix of wit, warmth, and awkward charm. Combining stand-up with musical comedy on his ukulele, Phil unpacks his early onset midlife crisis, grief, and the politics of WhatsApp groups. After a run in Cape Town, the show is now set to represent South African comedy on the global stage.
“This is a dream I’ve been working toward for years,” says de Lange. “Getting into Edinburgh is a massive step, but getting to Edinburgh — flights, accommodation, venue costs, marketing — is a whole other mountain. That’s why I’m asking for a bit of help from the people who’ve laughed with me along the way.”
Supporters of the campaign can contribute at various reward tiers, including exclusive previews, private gigs, and heartfelt thank-yous. True to Phil’s DIY spirit, all rewards are voluntary and designed to bring value, joy, or just a little extra weirdness to backers’ lives.
Phil isn’t just relying on crowdfunding — he’s also investing heavily in the journey himself, working gigs, saving, and hustling every step of the way. But as he says, “it takes a village to raise a comic.”
With South African comedy making waves internationally, this campaign is more than one comedian’s personal goal — it’s an opportunity to showcase local talent on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.
