When a brand known for bold innovation aligns with one of South Africa’s most powerful sporting icons, the result is more than a partnership — it’s a statement of intent. Olympic champion Caster Semenya has officially joined JAECOO South Africa as the brand ambassador for its first plug-in hybrid SUV, the J7 SHS, marking a defining moment for both the athlete and the fast-growing automotive brand.

Known globally for her resilience, discipline and uncompromising pursuit of excellence, Semenya embodies the very values JAECOO is bringing to South African roads: performance without compromise, intelligent design and forward-thinking mobility.

“I love the J7’s style,” says Semenya. “It’s sleek, spacious, and packed with advanced safety features — which is especially important for me as a parent. For someone like me with kids and a family, it just fits perfectly.”

Redefining expectations in electrified mobility

The J7 SHS represents JAECOO’s bold entry into electrified mobility in South Africa, combining cutting-edge hybrid technology with everyday practicality. Delivering 255 kW of power and 525 N.m of torque, the SUV offers a dynamic driving experience while maintaining impressive efficiency.

Its 18.3 kWh battery provides an all-electric driving range of up to 90 km, ideal for daily commuting, while the combined driving range exceeds 1,200 km, ensuring peace of mind for longer journeys.

For Semenya, the experience behind the wheel challenged long-held assumptions.

“The most surprising thing about the J7 SHS for me is how spacious it is — the boot is massive — and how silent it drives,” she explains. “I was one of those people who had preconceived notions about Chinese cars not being of a certain quality, but I was wrong. The J7 SHS is one of the best driving experiences I’ve ever had.”

Built for real life, not just the brochure

Beyond performance figures, the J7 SHS is designed for the realities of modern family life. Inside, luxurious leather seating, a 14.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a suite of advanced driver-assistance features deliver a refined yet practical driving environment.

“My wife loves how comfortable and stylish it is,” says Semenya. “The J7 SHS made our long-distance trips with the kids so much more enjoyable. And the infotainment system really stands out — the screen is super responsive, and the sound quality is amazing.”

The emphasis on comfort, safety and intuitive technology reinforces JAECOO’s positioning as a brand that understands everyday mobility — not just headline specifications.

Sustainability meets performance

Driving a plug-in hybrid has also reshaped how Semenya views sustainability.

“It’s shown me that I can have my cake and eat it too,” she says. “The electric range is great for my daily drives, and the petrol engine handles the longer trips.”

That balance between efficiency and power lies at the heart of the J7 SHS proposition — offering drivers a more sustainable option without sacrificing performance, convenience or driving pleasure.

A partnership rooted in shared values

The collaboration between Caster Semenya and JAECOO South Africa reflects a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and a future-focused approach to mobility. It is also grounded in family, resilience and authenticity — values that resonate strongly with South African consumers.

“This brand resonates with me because of its commitment to performance, style and innovation,” Semenya concludes. “Values that align with my own dedication to excellence in athletics.”

With the J7 SHS, JAECOO signals its ambition to play a meaningful role in South Africa’s evolving automotive landscape — and with Semenya at the wheel, that journey begins with purpose.
