African rugby fans are about to experience a new level of intensity, passion and weekly drama as ESPN Africa officially brings France’s premier club rugby competition, the TOP 14, to screens across sub-Saharan Africa.

In a major move that expands the continent’s access to elite global sport, the broadcaster has secured the rights to air one of the world’s most competitive and culturally rich rugby leagues—delivering front-row access to a tournament defined by fierce rivalries, packed stadiums and uncompromising physicality.

A Big Weekend Kick-Off for African Fans

The action begins this weekend, setting the tone for what promises to be a thrilling addition to the rugby calendar.

Fans can tune in to:

  • Stade Rochelais vs Union Bordeaux Bègles (Saturday, 14:30 – ESPN2)
  • Aviron Bayonnais vs Section Paloise (Saturday, 16:35 – ESPN2)
  • Castres Olympique vs Stade Toulousain (Saturday, 21:00 – ESPN2)
  • Racing 92 vs Stade Français Paris (Sunday, 21:00 CAT – ESPN2)

Broadcasts will be available on ESPN (DStv 218, StarSat 248), ESPN2 (DStv 219, StarSat 249), as well as via linear channels on Disney+ in South Africa—ensuring accessibility for a wide audience.

Local Stars, Global Stage

Adding an extra layer of excitement for African viewers is the presence of South African rugby talent competing in the league.

Players like Jean-Luc du Preez, Arno Botha, and Nico Janse van Rensburg bring a familiar edge to the competition, giving local fans even more reason to stay invested week after week.

More Than Just Matches — A Season-Long Story

ESPN Africa will broadcast:

  • Four live matches every week
  • 36 regular season games for the current season
  • Six playoff matches
  • Expanded coverage in future seasons with over 100 fixtures annually

All matches will feature English commentary and graphics, making the competition accessible and engaging from the opening whistle to the final.

This consistent, high-frequency coverage is designed to immerse fans in the rhythm of the league—where momentum shifts quickly, rivalries run deep, and every match carries weight.

A League Defined by Rivalry and Identity

The TOP 14 stands apart in global rugby. It is not just a competition—it is a cultural force.

From historic clubs to modern powerhouses, each fixture is charged with local pride and emotional intensity. The blend of international stars and homegrown French talent creates a dynamic, unpredictable spectacle that keeps fans coming back week after week.

Strengthening ESPN Africa’s Sporting Portfolio

The addition of the TOP 14 further strengthens ESPN Africa’s already diverse sports offering, which includes multiple global codes—from basketball and American football to baseball and hockey.

“This is the leading domestic rugby competition globally, and we are excited to offer our audiences the very best in European rugby,” said Kyle De Klerk of The Walt Disney Company Africa.

Echoing this sentiment, Yann Roubert highlighted the significance of the partnership in expanding the league’s global footprint and connecting with one of the world’s most passionate rugby regions.

A New Chapter for Rugby Fans in Africa

This landmark deal signals more than just additional content—it reflects a growing recognition of Africa’s appetite for world-class sport.

By bringing the TOP 14 to local screens, ESPN Africa is not only expanding access but deepening the connection between African fans and the global rugby ecosystem.

For viewers across the continent, the message is clear:
The world’s best rugby is no longer far away—it’s right here, every weekend.
