This June, the spirit of artistic freedom, community celebration and musical discovery returns as Fête de la Musique marks its milestone 15th edition in Johannesburg, transforming Victoria Yards into a vibrant stage where established stars and emerging talent will share the spotlight.
Taking place on Saturday, 20 June 2026, the free-entry festival promises another unforgettable day of live performances, cultural exchange and creative expression, continuing a legacy that has connected audiences through the universal language of music.
A Global Celebration with Local Soul
First launched in France in 1982, Fête de la Musique has grown into one of the world’s largest music celebrations, now observed in more than 120 countries.
Built around a simple but powerful idea — free music for everyone — the festival encourages musicians of all backgrounds and experience levels to perform in public spaces while making live music accessible to audiences of every age.
Since arriving in Johannesburg 15 years ago, the festival has become a cherished fixture on the city’s cultural calendar, known for showcasing South Africa’s rich musical diversity while creating opportunities for artistic exchange and community engagement.
A Standout Line-Up for a Landmark Edition
The 2026 edition brings together a carefully curated selection of artists chosen from more than 300 applications reviewed by a panel of local and international music experts.
Leading the programme are some of South Africa’s most respected contemporary voices.
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Zoë Modiga joins genre-defying collective The Brother Moves On and celebrated alternative R&B artist lordkez as headline acts for this year’s festival.
They will be joined by an exciting mix of established and emerging performers, including Renaissance, [kimetsu.], Zykes Madiga, Thoknique, Namakau Star, Tessi Nandi, Thula Khumalo, Measuretutti Vocal Ensemble, Little Music School in the Valley, Shameless Band, Lesedi Ntsane and Khulu.

Ahead of the Johannesburg celebration, selected artists will also perform at the Alliance Française of Pretoria on Saturday, 13 June 2026, extending the festival’s reach to audiences in Tshwane.

This year, festival-goers will also have the opportunity to engage with RedCircle by TEDxJohannesburg, an interactive platform inviting visitors to share one-minute ideas inspired by music, creativity and community.

A Commitment to Sustainability
The 2026 edition is also placing greater emphasis on environmental responsibility.
In partnership with the Keep it CKlean (KiCK) initiative, organisers are implementing measures designed to reduce the festival’s environmental footprint.
Waste separation stations will be placed throughout the venue, while food waste collection and community clean-up activities will help ensure Victoria Yards remains a sustainable and welcoming creative space during and after the event.
The initiative reflects a growing commitment among cultural events to balance celebration with environmental awareness.
