In the heart of Johannesburg, where stories of struggle and triumph echo through generations, a powerful sound is set to rise once more—the unmistakable call of the trumpet that once carried a nation’s spirit across the world.

From 9 to 12 April 2026, Joburg Theatre will transform into a living, breathing celebration of one of South Africa’s most iconic cultural figures, Hugh Masekela. Presented in partnership with the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, this strictly limited four-day concert spectacular promises more than music—it promises memory, meaning, and movement.

A Sound That Shaped a Nation

This is not just a tribute. It is a reclamation of legacy.

Known affectionately as “Bra Hugh,” Masekela was more than a virtuoso trumpeter—he was a storyteller of resistance, a global ambassador of African sound, and a fearless voice during South Africa’s liberation struggle. His music didn’t just entertain; it educated, united, and ignited.

Now, years after his passing, his influence still pulses through the veins of African music—and this production brings that pulse vividly back to life.

Where Legacy Meets a New Generation

Under the theme “From the Soil to the World,” the concert honours Masekela’s role as both collaborator and mentor. His Pan-African vision—rooted locally yet resonating globally—remains a benchmark for artistic excellence.

Taking to the stage is a carefully curated lineup of artists, each carrying a fragment of his fire:

  • Vusi Mahlasela – “The Voice,” whose powerful storytelling and commitment to justice mirror Masekela’s own journey.

  • Judith Sephuma – the Queen of Afro-Jazz, bringing a rich collaborative history and unmatched vocal depth.

  • Zoe Modiga – a modern force reimagining timeless classics with emotional precision.

  • Tresor – delivering a vibrant Afro-pop energy that reflects Masekela’s continental vision.

  • Baobab Sisters & iComplete – infusing rhythm, harmony, and movement into the celebration.

These are not mere performances—they are acts of gratitude, each note a tribute to the man who helped shape their artistic paths.

The Minds Behind the Magic

Guiding this emotional and sonic journey is acclaimed director James Ngcobo, whose creative vision transforms the stage into a dynamic storytelling canvas.

Alongside him, musical director Sydney Mavundla ensures that the trumpet—Masekela’s signature voice—remains front and centre, echoing with precision, passion, and purpose.

An Experience Beyond the Stage

The tribute begins long before the first note is played.

Audiences entering the theatre foyer will step into a curated experience of remembrance and celebration:

  • Iconic Moments: A chance to stand beside and photograph Masekela’s legendary horn

  • Exclusive Merchandise: Carefully crafted memorabilia capturing the essence of his artistry

It is an immersive journey—one that honours not only the music, but the man behind it.

A Celebration That Starts Before Opening Night

The story begins even earlier, with rehearsals opening on 30 March. Media partners will have exclusive access to behind-the-scenes moments, offering a rare glimpse into the creation of this landmark production, along with interview opportunities with the cast and creative team.

A Limited Moment. A Lasting Legacy.

With tickets ranging from R200 to R550, available through the Joburg Theatre Box Office and WebTickets, this four-day event is set to be one of the most meaningful cultural highlights of 2026.

But beyond the logistics lies something deeper.

This is a gathering of generations. A celebration of African identity. A reminder that music can still unite, uplift, and inspire.

Because legends don’t fade—they echo.

And this April, the horn will sound again.
