inDrive Puts More Control in Passengers’ Hands

Knowing what you will pay, how long you might wait and who will be picking you up can make a difference to every ride. inDrive is introducing new app features in South Africa designed to give passengers clearer information, greater control and more confidence throughout their journey.

The global mobility and delivery services platform says the updates respond to changing passenger expectations, with a focus on making everyday journeys more predictable, transparent and safe.

At the heart of the changes is a simple principle: passengers should understand what is happening with their ride request and receive a clear response when they interact with the app.

Clearer fare guidance before you book

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of colour-coded price hints. inDrive allows passengers to set their own fare, and the new guidance helps them understand how their offer may affect their chances of finding a driver quickly.

A green indicator means the proposed price is close to the recommended fare, making a quick driver response more likely.

An orange indicator signals that the offer is below market expectations and that the wait is likely to be longer.

This gives passengers more information before placing an order. They can weigh up affordability against waiting time and decide which matters most for that particular journey.

The app will also explain when demand is high. During peak periods, passengers may see the message: “Demand is high right now, so the recommended fare is temporarily higher.”

Rather than leaving passengers to guess why a recommended fare has increased, the explanation makes the reason visible.

Live updates bring more visibility to ride requests

Waiting for a driver can be frustrating when there is little information about what is happening behind the scenes. inDrive’s new dynamic status updates aim to address that uncertainty.

The search screen now shows how many drivers are nearby and which drivers are viewing a passenger’s request. This gives passengers a clearer picture of the search process instead of leaving them with a static message.

According to inDrive, the changes are intended to reduce cancellations caused by uncertainty.

The company has also introduced smarter cancellation options. If a passenger selects the wrong pickup point or ride type, the app asks for the reason when they cancel and offers immediate fixes.

Accidental requests can be cancelled immediately without extra steps, helping to avoid wasted time and duplicate orders.

Driver verification takes a more visible position

Knowing who is behind the wheel is another important part of the passenger experience. inDrive has made driver verification badges more prominent on driver cards and selection screens, giving passengers a clearer indication of verification status.

Behind these badges is a process that includes document checks, facial recognition, vehicle inspections and ongoing selfie or photo verification.

The company also says suspicious activity or duplicate accounts trigger automatic bans.

These measures make verification more visible to passengers while highlighting the checks inDrive says it uses to assess drivers and their vehicles.

Why these changes matter in South Africa

The updates arrive as South Africa’s e-hailing market continues to expand.

According to the latest Research and Markets report on South Africa’s e-hailing market, the market is valued at US$1.6 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach US$3.6 billion by 2031, approximately R67 billion.

The report identifies growing urban demand, particularly in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, rising smartphone penetration, demand for app-based mobility services and the expansion of competing platforms as factors driving the market.

For South African passengers, convenience, safety and rising fuel costs are among the key considerations behind choosing e-hailing services. Against this backdrop, clearer pricing guidance, more informative ride statuses and visible driver verification address practical questions that can arise before and during a trip.

inDrive: fairness, clarity and trust at the centre

Ashif Black, Country Representative for inDrive South Africa, said the company continues to use passenger feedback to improve the app.

“We continuously listen to how people use our app and look for ways to remove the uncertainty they experience around price, waiting times and trust in their driver. South Africans value fairness, clarity and trust in their everyday transport.”

Black said the changes are designed to benefit both passengers and drivers.

“These updates give passengers clear answers at every stage of the order journey, while helping drivers secure more relevant orders. In a market where affordability and safety are top priorities, we are building resilience and reliability into every ride.”

He added that clearer pricing and easier corrections to pickup problems can help passengers make informed decisions while reducing the time drivers spend on orders that do not result in completed trips.

“Our passengers now have more opportunity to make the informed choices they’re after. At the same time, when passengers name realistic prices and pickup issues are fixed in a single tap, drivers receive more relevant orders and spend less time on trips that never happen,” Black explains further.

More information, more informed choices

The latest inDrive updates focus on the moments that shape a passenger’s experience: setting a fare, waiting for a response, correcting an order and checking driver verification.

The changes do not remove every uncertainty from a journey. Instead, they aim to give passengers more information to make decisions and a clearer view of what is happening inside the app.

For inDrive, the work is ongoing. The company says it gathers passenger expectations through surveys, reviews and in-app behaviour, turning that feedback into interface changes rather than treating improvements as a once-off release.

As e-hailing continues to grow in South Africa, the company is placing greater emphasis on transparency, choice and trust — with the aim of making every ride easier to understand from the moment a passenger places an order.
