A Family Affair: Big Laughs, Bold Names and Comedy Royalty Take Centre Stage at the 13th Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards

JOHANNESBURG, 4 May 2026 — On a night where laughter echoed louder than applause and punchlines landed like legacy moments, South Africa’s biggest comedy celebration returned in full force. The 13th Annual Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards transformed Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre into a living, breathing comedy spectacle on Saturday, 2 May — and this year, it felt closer to home than ever before.

Because this wasn’t just an awards show.

It was a family gathering.

Comedy, Unfiltered: A Family Affair Like No Other

Under the theme “A Family Affair,” the 2026 edition embraced the truth every comedian knows but rarely says out loud: comedy is chaotic, unpredictable, and deeply connected — a dysfunctional family where everyone plays their part and nobody holds back.

At the heart of it all stood the Goliath family — Jason Goliath, Donovan Goliath, Nicholas Goliath, and Kate Goliath — whose electric chemistry blurred the line between hosting and real-life family banter. Their presence didn’t just guide the night; it defined it, pulling the audience into a shared experience that felt as personal as it was entertaining.

From the opening moment, the tone was clear: this was comedy at its boldest, loudest, and most unapologetically human.

A Night of Moments That Mattered

Audiences were treated to everything that has made the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards the most anticipated event on the local comedy calendar — sharp roasts, emotional acceptance speeches, unexpected twists, and standing ovations that felt earned, not expected.

But beyond the laughter, there was something deeper unfolding.

Each performance, each award, and each moment on stage reinforced a powerful truth: South African comedy is not just surviving — it’s evolving, expanding, and claiming its space with confidence.

From industry veterans to rising stars, the lineup reflected a vibrant ecosystem of talent, all contributing to a night that balanced celebration with significance.

And at the centre of it all stood the Waldo trophy — one of the most coveted symbols in South African entertainment — representing not just achievement, but belonging.

The Winners: A New Chapter in Comedy History

As the spotlight shifted to recognition, a new class of winners stepped forward — each adding their name to a growing legacy shaping the future of comedy in South Africa.

2026 Award Winners:

  • Savanna Newcomer Award: Rae Du Plooy
  • Breakthrough Act of the Year: Linde Sibanda
  • Best Comedy Festival or Show: Ground Culture Comedy
  • Joe Mafela Award: Siya Seya
  • Innovative Comedy Performance: Conrad Koch & Chester Missing
  • Beyond the Mic Award: Kagiso Lediga (for voicing young Rafiki in The Lion King)
  • Best Friend of Comedy Award: Yaaseen Barnes
  • The Legacy Award: David Kau
  • Comedic Content Award: Vafa Naraghi
  • Best Solo Show: Dillan Oliphant for Masekind
  • Headliner of the Year: Celeste Ntuli
  • Comedian of the Year: Dillan Oliphant

These weren’t just wins — they were defining moments, marking careers that continue to shape the voice and direction of South African comedy.

A Brand That Backs the Punchline

Now under the ownership of Savanna Premium Cider, the awards have entered a new era — one driven by long-term investment in the industry and the people behind it.

Kayla Hendricks, Marketing Communications Manager at Savanna Premium Cider, captured the intention behind the partnership:

“These awards are more than just a night of celebration — they are about building the industry, recognising excellence, and creating a platform where comedians can grow, thrive, and be celebrated at the highest level.”

It’s a commitment that goes beyond sponsorship — one that aims to elevate careers, open doors internationally, and ensure that South African comedians are not only seen, but sought after.

More Than a Night — A Movement

With a full house, career-defining wins, and laughter that carried long after the curtains closed, the 13th Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards once again proved why it remains the most important night in South African comedy.

For those who missed the magic — or simply want to relive it — the official show special will air on e.tv on 13 June at 21:45.

And if there’s one thing this year made clear, it’s this:

Comedy in South Africa isn’t just entertainment.

It’s family.

About the Awards

Now in its 13th year, the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards was created to build and elevate the local comedy industry — recognising pioneers, supporting emerging talent, and creating pathways for growth both locally and internationally.

From helping comedians sell out shows to encouraging corporate bookings and global opportunities, the awards continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of South African comedy.
