St John’s College Launches Music Fest 2026 — A New Tradition With Purpose

On Saturday, 7 March 2026, St John’s College will host the inaugural St John’s College Music Fest at Burger Field on its Houghton campus — a family-friendly outdoor celebration that blends live music, community spirit and meaningful philanthropy.

But this is more than just a date on the social calendar. It is the beginning of an annual gathering rooted in connection and impact.

A Celebration of Sound on Burger Field

Set against the iconic backdrop of the College’s Houghton campus, the Music Fest will run from 14:00 to 21:00, transforming Burger Field into a relaxed festival space designed for all ages.

Presented by the St John’s College Parent Association, the debut line-up features a powerful showcase of South African musical talent:

  • DJ Kent — award-winning DJ and producer, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in South African house music

  • Vusi Nova — multi-platinum, award-winning Afro-Pop artist

  • Louise Carver — acclaimed folk-rock singer-songwriter and pianist

Additional acts will be announced.

Together, the artists promise an afternoon and evening soundtrack that moves from house beats to Afro-Pop soul and folk-rock storytelling — curated to create a vibrant yet relaxed festival atmosphere.

Designed for Families, Friends and the Wider Community

The St John’s College Music Fest has been carefully envisioned as an inclusive outdoor experience.

Guests can expect:

  • Live performances on the Main Stage

  • A curated food court

  • A relaxed drinks garden

  • A dedicated kids’ play zone

Festival-goers are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and camp chairs, settle onto the lawns and immerse themselves in a day of music and connection.

The event is open to students, parents, alumni, prospective families, neighbouring schools and the broader public — welcoming anyone looking to share in a meaningful community celebration.

A Festival With a Powerful Purpose

While music sets the tone, the heart of the event lies in its philanthropic mission.

All proceeds from the Music Fest will support the St John’s College Centenary Scholarship Programme — one of South Africa’s most respected scholarship initiatives.

Established in 1998, the programme provides full scholarships to outstanding Black South African boys from disadvantaged backgrounds. Each year, ten scholars enter Grade 8, with fifty scholars supported across the College at any given time.

The scholarship covers tuition, boarding, uniforms, books, medical aid and holistic learner support. Its impact extends far beyond financial assistance — it opens doors to transformative educational opportunity.

By attending the Music Fest, guests are not only enjoying live entertainment but directly contributing to a life-changing legacy.
