  1. It ‘cleaned up’ at a local Pop-Culture Festival in Cape Town 2024: the Yu-Gi-Oh! learn to play, demos and tournaments had the longest queues at the festival in Cape Town. “People love the game, love the cards,” says Philip Galliford of Unplug Yourself.
  2. The Origin Story: Yu-Gi-Oh! began as a manga series written and illustrated by Kazuki Takahashi. It debuted in 1996 and quickly gained popularity, leading to the creation of various spin-offs, including anime series, video games and trading card games.
  3. The cards hold value: Rare and sought-after cards can be very valuable and should be looked after. A range of specially designed accessories are available for collector’s and players to store, protect and transport their collections.
  4. In 2009 the Guinness World Records named Yu-Gi-Oh! the top selling trading card game worldwide: it is estimated that over 35 billion cards have been sold since its launch.
  5. The Heart of the Cards: Central to the game’s lore is the concept of the “Heart of the Cards,” where a duellist’s belief and trust in their deck’s potential can turn the tide of a duel. It’s not just about the cards you have, but how you use them.
  6. The Duel Monsters: The card game within the Yu-Gi-Oh! universe is called Duel Monsters. Players summon powerful creatures, cast spells, and set traps to out-manoeuvre their opponents. Over the years, the game has evolved with new mechanics and card types.
  7. The Phases of a Duel: A Yu-Gi-Oh! duel comprises several phases, including the Draw Phase, Standby Phase, Main Phase 1, Battle Phase, Main Phase 2, and End Phase. Understanding these phases is crucial for strategic gameplay.
  8. The Forbidden & Limited List: To maintain balance and fairness, Yu-Gi-Oh! has a Forbidden & Limited List that restricts certain cards from competitive play. Cards on the list are either forbidden, limited to one, two, or three copies per deck, or semi-limited.
  9. Archetypes and Strategies: Yu-Gi-Oh! features numerous card archetypes, each with its own theme and play style. From dragons and warriors to spellcasters and machines, mastering different archetypes allows players to create diverse and powerful decks.
  10. It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023: and the brand continues to celebrate in 2024 with the launch of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG 2-Player Starter Set and more to come!
