More South Africans Head to the Bush This Festive Season as Outdoor Travel Becomes Stylish, Comfortable and Affordable

This festive season, South Africans are quietly rewriting the holiday rulebook. Instead of crowded beaches, busy malls and expensive resorts, a growing number of travellers are heading for the bush — choosing campsites, nature reserves and off-grid escapes that promise simplicity, connection and affordability.

Camping, micro-adventures and self-drive holidays have emerged as the country’s preferred festive-season alternative, particularly among cost-conscious travellers seeking meaningful experiences without the financial strain. Across December and January, campsites, 4×4 routes and rustic nature stays are reporting rising interest as South Africans embrace outdoor-focused breaks.

According to South African Tourism’s annual domestic travel insights, local nature-based travel grew by more than 20% in 2024, with camping and self-drive holidays recording the biggest increase. SANParks has also noted heightened demand for camping and rustic accommodation across major parks, especially among couples and young families looking for budget-friendly ways to travel.

These national trends mirror what is being observed on the ground. The TrailPod Adventures team has seen a marked surge in interest in outdoor adventure lifestyles, particularly compact, flexible travel solutions that make bush breaks more accessible.

Why the Bush Has Become the Festive-Season Favourite

This shift is being driven by a powerful combination of economic reality, lifestyle changes and a renewed desire for genuine connection.

Affordable without feeling “cheap”
Campsites can cost as little as R400 per person for an entire weekend, making outdoor travel one of the last truly accessible holiday options that still feels special.

Rising travel costs are reshaping behaviour
With accommodation, fuel and daily expenses climbing, many families are trading traditional resorts for self-drive trips, off-grid stays and shorter micro-adventures.

4×4 culture is booming
The rise of compact SUVs and vehicles like the Jimny has normalised spontaneous weekend adventuring, trail-hopping and small-scale overlanding.

Digital detoxing is intentional
Couples and families are actively choosing travel experiences that encourage less screen time and more shared moments.

Nature remains the ultimate reset
Time outdoors continues to rank as one of the most effective ways to improve mood, reduce stress and recover from burnout — a major motivator during the holiday season.

The Rise of Retro Camping Trailers

One of the most notable trends this summer is the growing popularity of retro camping trailers. These compact, lightweight and stylish caravans are designed primarily for two people, offering a comfortable alternative to tent camping without the cost of a full-size caravan.

South Africans are gravitating towards these trailers because they are:

  • Towable by everyday cars and small SUVs

  • Quick to set up, with simple interiors that include real mattresses, lighting and basic kitchens

  • Hard-shell protected against weather, wildlife and noise

  • Designed for a simplified, uncluttered outdoor experience without gear overload

Instead of pitching tents or booking expensive lodges, couples are opting for retro camping trailers that offer spontaneity, privacy and comfort — all while staying affordable.

TrailPod Adventures and the Small-Rig Travel Movement

South African startup TrailPod Adventures has emerged as one of the leaders in this growing retro camping trailer and small-rig travel trend. The company produces locally built teardrop caravans and offers 4×4 customisation for Jimnys, SUVs and overlanding vehicles.

TrailPod’s trailers and outdoor gear are designed specifically for South African terrain and climate, with lightweight builds, durable finishes and practical layouts shaped by real bush conditions.

“TrailPod was born from my own need to get out there without breaking the bank — and now I want more South Africans to experience that same sense of freedom through compact and capable caravans,” says Grant McPherson, Co-founder of TrailPod.

A Festive Season Defined by Simplicity

For many South Africans, this festive season will not be defined by queues, crowds or packed beaches, but by mountain sunrises, quiet veld mornings and nights spent under open, star-filled skies.

It signals a return to simplicity — holidays that prioritise fresh air, shared experiences and the freedom of the open road. And perhaps most importantly, it reinforces the idea that meaningful travel does not need to be expensive to feel extraordinary.

Gift Guide for the Adventurous

Practical, budget-friendly ideas for travellers or couples heading into the bush this festive season:

  • Collapsible braai grid

  • Insulated wine tumblers or real-glass camp set

  • Pocket-sized multi-tool

  • Solar lantern or string lights

  • Off-grid coffee maker kit

  • Tyre pressure gauge

  • Portable projector for movies under the stars
