South African consumers are no strangers to online shopping, streaming entertainment and digital convenience. But for years, many have watched from the sidelines as millions of customers across the globe enjoyed the benefits of Amazon Prime.
That wait is now over.
Amazon.co.za has officially launched Amazon Prime in South Africa, introducing a single membership that combines fast, free delivery, exclusive shopping deals, premium streaming entertainment and gaming benefits into one offering.
Already available in 26 countries worldwide, Prime has become one of Amazon’s most recognised services. Now, South African customers can access the same combination of convenience, savings and entertainment that has transformed the shopping habits of millions globally.
The launch also marks another significant milestone in Amazon’s South African journey, two years after the company officially entered the local market.
A New Chapter for Online Shopping in South Africa
At the heart of Amazon Prime is a promise that modern consumers value more than ever: saving both time and money.
Prime members in South Africa will enjoy unlimited free Same-Day and Next-Day Delivery on eligible products across a wide range of categories, including electronics, everyday essentials, sporting goods, kitchenware, footwear and home products.
Customers in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria who place qualifying orders before midday can receive unlimited FREE Same-Day Delivery with no minimum spend requirement.
Prime members in major cities across South Africa will also benefit from unlimited FREE Next-Day Delivery on eligible products, again without any minimum order value.
For shoppers accustomed to planning purchases around delivery costs or minimum basket sizes, the new service introduces a more flexible and convenient way to shop online.
“We are thrilled to offer South African customers world-class shopping and entertainment benefits in a single membership through Amazon Prime,” said Robert Koen, Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at Amazon.
“Since launching Amazon in South Africa two years ago, we have built a store our customers love, with a great selection of local and international products backed by a reliable delivery experience. Launching Prime is the next exciting milestone on our journey in the country, deepening our commitment to becoming a meaningful part of South Africans’ daily lives by offering even more convenience, savings, and entertainment.”
Prime Day Comes to South Africa
One of the most anticipated benefits for local members will be access to Prime Day, Amazon’s flagship annual shopping event.
For the first time, South African Prime members will be able to participate in the global retail event when it arrives locally from 23 to 29 June 2026.
Prime Day is known internationally for offering significant discounts across thousands of products and has become one of the biggest online shopping events on Amazon’s calendar.
Beyond Prime Day, members will gain access to exclusive deals and discounts throughout the year, as well as early access to promotional events such as Black Friday sales.
The result is an added layer of value for customers who regularly shop online and want priority access to limited-time offers.
Entertainment Included at No Extra Cost
The launch of Prime in South Africa is not solely about shopping.
Membership also includes access to Prime Video, Amazon’s streaming platform featuring award-winning Amazon Originals and a wide range of international movies and television series.
Prime members can stream content across smart televisions, gaming consoles, streaming devices, mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers.
Popular titles available to members include internationally recognised productions such as Reacher, Duplicity and The Summer I Turned Pretty, alongside South African content including Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story.
For consumers already subscribing to multiple entertainment platforms, the inclusion of Prime Video adds significant value to the overall membership offering.
Gaming Joins the Prime Experience
Gaming enthusiasts also have something to celebrate.
Amazon Prime membership includes access to Amazon Luna, the company’s cloud gaming service that allows players to stream selected games without requiring high-end gaming hardware.
Prime members can access titles such as Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Fortnite across supported devices.
The service also includes free downloadable PC games each month and a complimentary monthly Twitch channel subscription, enabling members to support their favourite content creators on the popular streaming platform.
Built Around Value
According to Jamil Ghani, Vice President of Amazon Prime, the company has witnessed the impact of Prime across diverse global markets and believes South African customers will experience similar benefits.
“We’ve seen first-hand how Prime transforms the way members shop and enjoy entertainment around the world – from India to Brazil, Egypt to Australia,” said Ghani.
“In every new country we’ve launched, Prime has become an indispensable part of members’ daily lives, saving them time and money while connecting them to world-class entertainment.”
“Today, we’re thrilled to bring that same promise to South Africa. We look forward to delivering disproportionate value when South African customers experience Prime’s convenience, value, and entertainment – and we’re only getting started.”
Pricing and Availability
South African customers can sign up immediately for a 30-day free trial.
Following the trial period, Amazon Prime is available at:
- R59 per month
- R399 per year
The annual option represents a saving of R309, or 44%, compared to paying monthly.
Customers can conveniently pay using South African debit and credit cards through Amazon.co.za.
With shopping, entertainment, gaming and delivery benefits now bundled into one membership, Amazon Prime’s arrival signals a new phase in South Africa’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
For consumers seeking convenience, value and entertainment in a single subscription, Amazon is betting that Prime will quickly become an essential part of everyday life.
