Every iconic fashion brand started with a single collection.
A bold idea.
A fresh perspective.
A designer willing to take a risk.
Now, South African Fashion Week (SAFW) is opening the door for the country’s next generation of fashion innovators through the launch of the SAFW New Talent Search 2026, one of the industry’s most respected platforms for discovering emerging creative talent.
More than a competition, the initiative offers designers a chance to gain national exposure, industry recognition and valuable support as they build commercially viable fashion businesses.
For womenswear designers ready to take the next step, this could be the opportunity that changes everything.
Designing the Future of South African Fashion
The 2026 brief challenges designers to think beyond trends and create collections that bridge generations.
Participants are encouraged to cross boundaries, embrace cultural influences and develop a new vision for South African fashion.
The theme asks designers to draw inspiration from the past while creating work that speaks to the present and predicts the future.
It is a challenge rooted in creativity, innovation and responsible fashion practices.
Designers are required to create their own original print, which must feature on at least 25% of the garments presented.
The competition also places a strong emphasis on sustainability.
Entrants are encouraged to use responsibly sourced fabrics, avoid fur and leather, provide garment care instructions that extend product life and create timeless collections that transcend seasonal trends.
The goal is clear.
Fashion that looks forward while acting responsibly.
A Platform Built for Growth
The New Talent Search is open to womenswear designers who have been operating for between three and ten years.
Applicants must hold a fashion design diploma or degree or have at least five years of design experience.
Previous SAFW New Talent Search finalists may enter again, while previous winners are not eligible.
Importantly, the competition is exclusively for womenswear designers.
Menswear collections will not be considered.
Semi-finalists will be judged not only on their creativity and ability to follow the brief but also on their capacity to supply retail stores and build sustainable fashion businesses.
The competition reflects the growing demand for designers who combine creative excellence with commercial viability.
What’s Up for Grabs?
For the winner, the rewards extend far beyond recognition.
The first prize includes R10,000 towards developing an SS27 collection, helping the designer prepare for South African Fashion Week’s April showcase.
A further R10,000 contribution towards developing an AW28 collection will support the winner’s continued growth later in the year.
The winner will also receive extensive media exposure, including social media coverage, professional video content and photographs of each garment showcased.
Combined, the prize package carries an estimated value of approximately R45,500.
In addition, the winner will participate in the 2027 New Talent Search showcase free of charge.
The Road to the Runway
The competition unfolds across three phases.
The first stage requires designers to complete an online registration form through the South African Fashion Week website before 30 June 2026 at 17:00.
The second phase involves the submission of an electronic portfolio.
Entrants must submit a motivation explaining why they are entering, describe their inspiration, create a mood board and provide seven detailed technical sketches showcasing their proposed collection.
All portfolio submissions must be received by 24 July 2026 at 17:00.
Judging will take place between 27 and 30 July, with semi-finalists announced on 31 July 2026.
Those selected will then move into the final phase.
Seven Looks. One Opportunity.
Semi-finalists will be required to produce a complete seven-look collection for final judging and fitting in Johannesburg during the week of 5 October 2026.
Collections must be fully completed and include all accessories and footwear.
Any incomplete collection will face disqualification.
The winner will be revealed during the SA Fashion Week New Talent Search Showcase on 22 October 2026.
For many designers, that runway presentation represents more than a competition.
It represents a chance to stand in front of buyers, media, industry leaders and fashion enthusiasts who could help shape the next chapter of their careers.
Fashion With Responsibility
The 2026 competition places responsible fashion at the heart of the creative process.
Designers are encouraged to research sustainable practices and actively contribute to shaping a more ethical future for the industry.
From fabric selection to garment longevity and responsible sourcing, the brief reflects a growing global shift toward conscious fashion.
The challenge is not only to create beautiful garments.
It is to create fashion with purpose.
