Agatha Christie fans are in for a thrilling treat this spring as The Murder of Roger Ackroyd arrives at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre from 21 August to 27 September 2026. Featuring one of literature’s most beloved detectives, the production brings a fresh stage adaptation of Christie’s celebrated crime novel to Johannesburg audiences, promising suspense, humour, shocking twists and a mystery that has captivated readers for generations.
At the heart of the story is the legendary Belgian sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Seemingly retired and enjoying a quieter life in the village of King’s Abbot, Poirot has traded criminal investigations for gardening. However, his peaceful routine is shattered when Roger Ackroyd, the influential owner of Fernly Hall, is murdered.
What follows is a gripping investigation filled with secrets, conflicting motives and suspicious alibis. Assisted by the local doctor and police inspector, Poirot must navigate a maze of deception to uncover the truth. As the mystery deepens, he soon realises that solving crimes remains his true calling.
A Christie Classic Comes Alive
Widely regarded as one of the most influential works by Agatha Christie, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd remains a benchmark in detective fiction. This brand-new stage adaptation captures everything audiences love about Christie’s storytelling: eccentric characters, hidden motives, clever clues and unforgettable revelations.
The production promises a theatrical experience packed with suspense and audience engagement, inviting viewers to test their own detective skills against Poirot’s famous “little grey cells.”
A Stellar Cast Takes the Stage
Directed by acclaimed theatre-maker Alan Swerdlow and designed by Denis Hutchinson, the production reunites audiences with fan-favourite performer Alan Committie, who returns to the role of Poirot.
Joining him on stage are Christie veterans Graham Hopkins, Dianne Simpson, Sharon Spiegel Wagner, Mike Huff, Brett Kruger and Michael Richard.
Adding fresh intrigue to the mystery are newcomers Russel Savadier, Louise Saint-Claire, Mary-Anne Wright, Sarah Wolhuter and Dean Goldblum, each bringing another layer of suspicion to a cast filled with potential culprits.
Can You Solve the Crime Before Poirot?
Part of the enduring appeal of Christie’s mysteries is their ability to turn every audience member into a detective. Every conversation, every glance and every alibi becomes a clue. The challenge is simple: can you uncover the murderer before Poirot reaches his famous conclusion?
With its combination of suspense, wit and theatrical flair, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is shaping up to be one of Johannesburg’s must-see productions of 2026.
