Two spoons or one? Milk first or last? Boiling water or just off the boil?
For many South Africans, coffee is never simply coffee.
It is a morning ritual. A road-trip essential. A welcome-home tradition. And, sometimes, a very specific set of rules that nobody else is allowed to change.
Now, NESCAFÉ is asking South Africans to reveal the personality behind their perfect cup.
To celebrate International Coffee Day on 1 October, NESCAFÉ has launched Coffee-losophy, a campaign inviting coffee lovers to share the rituals, preferences and opinions that make their coffee uniquely theirs.
And there is a little extra motivation to share: participants stand a chance to win one of 20 cash vouchers worth R2 000 each.
So, What Is Your Coffee-losophy?
A Coffee-losophy is the personal point of view behind your perfect cup.
It is how you make your coffee, why you make it that way and the little choices that turn an ordinary cup into your cup.
Maybe you are loyal to two spoons of NESCAFÉ Classic and a drop of skimmed milk.
Maybe your coffee belongs in your grandmother’s old china cup.
Or perhaps you have never measured anything in your life.
According to NESCAFÉ, there is a philosophy behind every cup.
And South Africans have plenty of coffee opinions to share.
Coffee Looks Different Around the World
Coffee culture is anything but one-size-fits-all.
Around the world, people enjoy coffee in countless ways.
There is the quick espresso enjoyed at an Italian bar counter. There is the slow, shared pot in Ethiopia. Then there is sweet iced coffee on a busy street in Vietnam.
South Africa has its own coffee rituals too.
It can be the morning cup paired with a rusk.
The flask packed for a long road trip.
The pot that goes on the moment visitors arrive.
And, of course, the carefully guarded declaration of exactly how someone takes their coffee.
Those traditions are now meeting a new generation of coffee lovers who are experimenting with recipes, flavours and coffee hacks online.
South Africa’s Coffee Habits Are Changing
The country’s relationship with coffee continues to evolve.
According to MAPS data from the Marketing Research Foundation, analysed by Eighty20, 22.7 million South Africans, nearly half of the adult population, drink coffee every day.
The same data shows coffee consumption growing by nearly 8% year on year.
Coffee moments are changing too.
Iced coffee is no longer limited to a summer treat. Customisation has become part of the experience, while online communities continue to share new recipes, flavour combinations and coffee hacks.
NESCAFÉ’s Coffee-losophy campaign celebrates both sides of that story.
It makes space for the familiar rituals passed down through families while also embracing the new coffee creations being shared online.
From Classic to Cappuccino
There is no single way to join the conversation.
Coffee lovers can share anything from a carefully measured NESCAFÉ Classic to an indulgent NESCAFÉ Cappuccino.
A refined NESCAFÉ Gold moment counts too.
So does an iced coffee creation made with NESCAFÉ Espresso Concentrate.
And for those who prefer the comfort of a Ricoffy ritual, there is a Coffee-losophy waiting to be shared there too.
The idea is simple: every cup has a story.
Share Your Cup, Win R2 000
NESCAFÉ is inviting coffee lovers to share their coffee recipe, ritual or photo on Instagram for a chance to win one of 20 cash vouchers worth R2 000 each.
To enter, participants need to share their coffee recipe, ritual or a photo of their cup on Instagram, tag @nescafesa and use #Coffeelosophy.

There Is No Wrong Way to Take Your Coffee
“Ask any South African how they take their coffee and you’ll get a very specific answer, usually with a story attached,” says Anna Stewart, Business Executive Officer, Beverages, Nestlé East and Southern Africa Region.
She says those small rules and rituals reveal something about who we are, making International Coffee Day an opportunity to celebrate them.
With Coffee-losophy, NESCAFÉ is inviting South Africans to share their coffee personalities and discover more about the people they share their kettle with.
Because, according to the campaign, there is no right or wrong answer.
There is simply your Coffee-losophy.
Behind Every Cup
There is another story behind the coffee conversation.
Every Coffee-losophy begins long before the kettle boils.
While coffee drinkers debate spoons, sugar and milk, International Coffee Day also provides an opportunity to recognise the farmers and communities around the world who grow the coffee enjoyed by people every day.
So this International Coffee Day, the question is simple.
How do you take yours?
Two spoons?
One?
Milk first?
Milk last?
Or are you the person who simply pours, stirs and refuses to measure?
Whatever your ritual, NESCAFÉ wants to hear the story behind your cup.
