The Florist Turning Flowers Into a Business

From Plettenberg Bay to Rosebank

Some businesses begin with a carefully calculated plan. Others begin with a passion that refuses to stay a hobby.

For Grant Donson, that passion started with flowers when he was just 14 years old.

Today, more than a decade later, his floral journey has grown into a thriving business at The Zone @ Rosebank, where his boutique has become a destination for clients looking for striking, contemporary floral designs.

His story is one of creativity, courage and the willingness to keep learning.

A passion that started at 14

Donson grew up in Plettenberg Bay, where he was introduced to the world of floristry at a young age.

From 14, he began learning the business and developing his craft. His journey later took him to Cape Town, where he spent several years learning from experienced floral masters.

When he eventually moved to Johannesburg, Donson was employed by another florist. But the entrepreneurial spark was already there.

In his spare time, he began running a part-time business.

One of his early ventures saw him selling flower arrangements from a pop-up shop outside a local gym. The concept was simple: bring beautiful flowers to busy executives who did not have time to seek them out.

The response gave him something more valuable than sales.

It gave him confidence.

His passion and can-do attitude attracted the attention of passers-by, helping him build momentum towards something bigger.

Then came the leap.

In 2017, Donson formally registered his business and stepped into full-time entrepreneurship.

The business lesson that changed everything

Passion gave Donson the starting point. Business education helped him build the foundation.

He completed the Management Essentials course at WITS Business School, where he strengthened his knowledge across several areas of running a business.

This included business development, business analysis, financial management, marketing and social media strategy.

The additional skills helped Donson refine his approach and take the business into its next stage.

And then another opportunity arrived.

From pop-up shop to floral destination

A little over two years ago, Donson was spotted by the management team at The Zone @ Rosebank.

The opportunity to open a fully fledged florist inside the centre represented a major step forward.

The location gave Flowers by Grant Donson access to Rosebank’s upmarket clientele while creating a permanent home for a business that had previously operated on a smaller scale.

Donson used the opportunity to create more than a traditional flower shop.

He created an experience.

Where flowers become the main attraction

Walk into Flowers by Grant Donson and the first impression is unmistakable.

The boutique combines contemporary décor with soft ambient lighting and an extensive display of flowers.

Premium roses sit alongside orchids, seasonal blooms and couture floral creations.

Every arrangement is carefully curated.

The result is a space that feels less like a conventional florist and more like a modern floral sanctuary.

The arrangements themselves have become part of the attraction. Shoppers regularly stop to admire the displays, while returning customers can discover something different as the collection evolves.

That constant sense of freshness is part of the business’s appeal.

A growing client base

The move to Rosebank has also opened new doors commercially.

Flowers by Grant Donson’s client list has expanded tenfold. It now includes major corporate companies, regular event-planning partnerships and repeat business from individual clients.

The florist has also become a familiar stop for regular visitors to the area.

For Donson, however, growth has not meant losing sight of the creative passion that started the journey.

“I have never looked back because I am doing what I love and on my own terms,” he says.

He describes the work as “food for my soul” and says his flamboyant floral creations allow him to continue pushing creative boundaries while responding to the needs of his clients.

He also credits Old Mutual Property with helping make the next stage of his business journey possible.

A business built on more than beautiful flowers

Donson’s journey shows what can happen when passion is matched with practical business skills and the courage to take opportunities when they appear.

From learning floristry at 14 in Plettenberg Bay, to developing his craft in Cape Town, testing his entrepreneurial instincts outside a Johannesburg gym and eventually opening a permanent boutique in Rosebank, the journey has been anything but ordinary.

Today, Flowers by Grant Donson stands as an example of how a creative passion can grow into a business with a distinctive identity.

And in a part of Johannesburg known for its energy, style and constant movement, there is something fitting about a florist whose work is designed to make people stop.

Sometimes, all it takes is a beautiful arrangement to make someone pause.

And for Donson, that pause has become part of the business.
