Paul Slabolepszy Returns to the Stage With Explosive New Thriller ‘MIDNIGHT IN PARYS’ at Montecasino

South African theatre audiences are about to be pulled into a tense, emotionally charged night where secrets simmer beneath fluorescent diner lights and every passing minute edges closer to something explosive.

From 12 June 2026, acclaimed playwright and actor Paul Slabolepszy brings his brand-new production, MIDNIGHT IN PARYS, to the Studio Theatre at Montecasino for a limited season that promises suspense, emotional intensity and classic Slabolepszy storytelling.

Directed by award-winning theatre-maker Bobby Heaney and starring both Paul Slabolepszy and Bianca Amato, the production places audiences inside a late-night diner in the Free State town of Parys — where two strangers collide under circumstances neither of them can escape.

A diner. Two strangers. One night that changes everything.

Set moments before midnight, the play centres on two deeply scarred individuals: one desperately running from the past, the other confronting a future they cannot avoid.

Inside the confined intimacy of a small-town diner, tension builds steadily as assumptions unravel and painful truths emerge.

In true Slabolepszy fashion, the production leans heavily into psychological intrigue, moral ambiguity and layered human emotion — delivering the kind of tightly wound storytelling that has long defined his work on the South African stage.

As the clock inches closer to midnight, the emotional and psychological stakes escalate, carrying audiences toward what promises to be an unforgettable climax.

A master storyteller returns

Few playwrights have shaped contemporary South African theatre quite like Paul Slabolepszy.

Known for his deeply human characters, razor-sharp dialogue and emotionally resonant storytelling, Slabolepszy has spent decades creating work that reflects the complexities, contradictions and tensions of South African life.

With MIDNIGHT IN PARYS, he once again turns ordinary spaces into emotional pressure cookers — transforming a seemingly quiet diner into a stage for confrontation, vulnerability and revelation.

The production is further elevated by the presence of Bianca Amato, whose acclaimed stage and screen career brings additional emotional depth and intensity to the piece.

Directed by award-winning Bobby Heaney

At the helm is Bobby Heaney, one of South Africa’s most respected theatre directors, known for crafting productions that balance emotional realism with gripping theatrical pacing.

Under his direction, MIDNIGHT IN PARYS promises to deliver not only suspense, but also an intimate exploration of fear, regret, survival and the stories people tell themselves to keep moving forward.

A must-see theatrical event this winter

Running from Friday 12 June to Sunday 12 July 2026, the production adds another major theatrical highlight to Johannesburg’s winter arts calendar.

Audiences can catch performances at the Studio Theatre at Montecasino on the following schedule:

  • Wednesday to Friday: 7:30pm
  • Saturday: 3pm and 8pm
  • Sunday: 2pm

Tickets range from R200 to R250, with special discounts available for groups, seniors and students through the theatre box office.

Bookings are available via Webtickets – MIDNIGHT IN PARYS or through the Theatre Box Office on (011) 511 1988.

Why this play matters now

At its core, MIDNIGHT IN PARYS is not simply a thriller.

It is a study of damaged people navigating impossible emotional terrain. A meditation on the stories we carry, the truths we avoid, and the moments that force us to confront ourselves without escape.

And perhaps that is why Slabolepszy’s work continues to resonate so deeply with South African audiences.

Because beneath the suspense and sharp dialogue lies something recognisably human: people trying to survive the weight of their own histories.

As midnight approaches in Parys, audiences can expect revelations, tension and emotional impact that linger long after the theatre lights come up.
