There are places on Earth that remain more mysterious than distant planets. Vast, powerful and largely unexplored, the world’s oceans continue to hold secrets that captivate scientists, storytellers and adventurers alike. This June, National Geographic Wild is inviting viewers to journey into these extraordinary underwater worlds through a special programming event designed to inspire wonder, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the blue heart of our planet.
In celebration of World Oceans Day, National Geographic Wild is presenting Beneath the Waves, a month-long television event airing every Sunday at 18:00 CAT throughout June on DStv Channel 182 and StarTimes Channel 221. The special programming block shines a spotlight on the beauty, mystery and fragility of Earth’s oceans through breathtaking cinematography and compelling storytelling.
The timing could not be more significant.
World Oceans Day serves as a global reminder of the indispensable role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. Covering more than 70% of the planet’s surface, oceans help regulate the climate, generate much of the oxygen humans breathe and provide a home to countless species that form some of the world’s most important ecosystems.
Yet despite their immense importance, oceans face increasing threats from pollution, habitat destruction and climate change. As conservation challenges grow, understanding and appreciating these underwater environments has never been more important.
It is against this backdrop that Beneath the Waves seeks to transport viewers below the surface, revealing hidden worlds filled with remarkable creatures, thriving ecosystems and fascinating stories of survival.
Through a carefully curated collection of documentaries, audiences will witness dazzling natural phenomena, encounter extraordinary marine species and gain new insights into the delicate balance that sustains life beneath the waves.
A Journey Through Some of Nature’s Greatest Wonders
The programming begins on Sunday, 14 June at 18:00 with Red Sea: Evolution’s Magic Garden.
The documentary explores the Red Sea, home to some of the world’s largest and most biodiverse coral reef systems. Beyond its vibrant underwater landscapes, viewers will discover how life flourishes even along the region’s seemingly harsh coastlines and islands, where an astonishing variety of plants and animals have adapted to survive.
On Sunday, 21 June at 18:00, viewers can explore the fascinating world of marine shells in Shells: Shaped by Nature.
Far more than beautiful treasures washed ashore, shells tell stories millions of years in the making. The documentary examines their origins, evolution and ecological significance while uncovering remarkable tales of adaptation, resilience and survival in Africa’s marine environments.
The series concludes on Sunday, 28 June at 18:00 with Deep Sea Titans.
From shallow coastal waters to the crushing darkness of the deep ocean, this captivating documentary follows some of the ocean’s largest creatures as they navigate a relentless struggle for survival in one of the planet’s most challenging environments.
Extending the Ocean Adventure Beyond Television
For those inspired to continue exploring the mysteries of marine life, Disney+ in South Africa offers an impressive collection of National Geographic documentaries dedicated to the ocean and its inhabitants.
Viewers can immerse themselves in acclaimed productions such as Secrets of the Whales and Secrets of the Octopus, which reveal the intelligence, behaviour and complex social lives of some of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures. Nature enthusiasts can also enjoy Secrets of the Penguins, another visually stunning exploration of survival in some of Earth’s most extreme environments.
Together, these documentaries complement the themes of Beneath the Waves, offering deeper insight into the extraordinary biodiversity that exists both above and below the waterline.
Looking Beneath the Surface
At its core, Beneath the Waves is more than a collection of wildlife documentaries. It is an invitation to pause and reconnect with one of the most influential forces shaping life on Earth.
The ocean influences weather systems, supports livelihoods, sustains biodiversity and helps maintain the delicate environmental balance upon which humanity depends. Yet much of its story remains unseen by the billions of people who rely on it every day.
By bringing viewers face-to-face with coral kingdoms, marine giants and hidden underwater marvels, National Geographic Wild hopes to inspire curiosity, understanding and ultimately a greater commitment to protecting these invaluable ecosystems.
Because before the ocean can be protected, it must first be understood.
And this June, viewers have an opportunity to do exactly that—one breathtaking dive at a time.
