Johannesburg is preparing for a theatrical event that promises to stir nostalgia, ignite emotion, and deliver pure stage magic. The globally celebrated musical Oliver! will officially open at the iconic Teatro at Montecasino on 29 January 2027, bringing one of the most beloved stories in musical theatre history back to life for a new generation.

A timeless story returns to the stage

Based on Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, Oliver! tells the unforgettable story of a young orphan navigating the unforgiving streets of Victorian London in search of belonging, hope, and family.

This production of Oliver!—with its legendary score by Lionel Bart—has earned global acclaim, collecting Olivier, Tony, and Oscar awards, cementing its place as one of the most cherished musicals of all time.

Audiences can expect to be swept away by iconic songs that have defined generations, including Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick-a-Pocket or Two, I’d Do Anything, Oom Pah Pah, and As Long As He Needs Me. These timeless numbers are more than just music—they are cultural touchpoints that continue to resonate across decades.

A powerhouse production with South African excellence

This highly anticipated staging is presented by Cameron Mackintosh, in collaboration with Pieter Toerien and Cape Town Opera—a partnership that signals both global pedigree and local brilliance.

Directed by Steven Stead, the production promises a visually rich and emotionally immersive experience. With dynamic choreography, intricately detailed costumes, and a phenomenal South African cast (soon to be announced), the show aims to honour its classic roots while injecting fresh energy and contemporary flair.

Characters that live forever

Set in 19th-century London, the story introduces audiences to a vivid cast of unforgettable characters:

  • The innocent and hopeful Oliver
  • The cunning yet charismatic Fagin
  • The warm-hearted and tragic Nancy
  • The quick-witted Artful Dodger

Together, they create a world that is as gritty as it is magical—one that explores resilience, compassion, and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity.

A must-see theatrical moment for 2027

More than just a musical, Oliver! is an emotional journey—one that continues to captivate audiences across generations. Its return to Johannesburg is set to be one of the defining cultural highlights of 2027, offering something rare: a production that speaks equally to first-time viewers and lifelong theatre lovers.

Whether you’re drawn by its unforgettable music, its powerful storytelling, or its rich theatrical legacy, this is one show that demands a place on every diary.
