Get ready to do the Time Warp again.
After capturing audiences with its fearless energy and cult appeal, The Rocky Horror Show is returning to Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre in Fourways from 23 October to 6 December 2026.
Presented by Pieter Toerien Productions in association with the Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy (LAMTA), this much-anticipated production is directed by Steven Stead and promises an electrifying night of rock ’n’ roll, outrageous comedy, unforgettable characters and unapologetic self-expression.
And yes, audiences can expect all the glorious chaos that has made The Rocky Horror Show a theatrical phenomenon for more than five decades.
A cult classic takes over Montecasino
First performed in 1973, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show has become one of the world’s most celebrated cult musicals.
Its enduring appeal lies in its refusal to play by the rules.
The story begins with sweethearts Brad and Janet, whose seemingly ordinary journey takes a dramatic turn when a storm, a flat tyre and an unexpected detour lead them to a mysterious castle.
Inside, they encounter the flamboyant and charismatic Dr Frank ’n’ Furter, his eccentric household and his latest creation, the muscle-bound Rocky.
What follows is a wild journey of temptation, transformation and self-discovery, fuelled by some of musical theatre’s most recognisable songs.
Among them are the iconic “Time Warp”, “Sweet Transvestite” and “Hot Patootie – Bless My Soul”.
The result is a production that celebrates individuality, freedom of expression and the courage to discover — and embrace — who you really are.
An impressive South African cast
The Montecasino production brings together an award-winning South African cast, led by Craig Urbani, who returns to the role of Frank-N-Furter.
Urbani is joined by Léa Blerk as Janet, Robert Everson as Brad, Schoemann Smit as Riff, Jasmine Minter as Magenta, Anna Olivier as Columbia, Anne Power as the Narrator, Micah Stokajovic as Rocky and Zak Hendrikz as Eddie/Dr Scott.
The stellar ensemble features Miguel de Sampaio, Tjaart van der Walt, Cleo Wesley, Alessia Gironi, Taya Pearson, Gabi Knight and Sasha Duffy.
Together, the cast brings fresh energy to a story that has been entertaining and challenging audiences for generations.
Steven Stead brings a bold new edge
Director Steven Stead is bringing his distinctive theatrical style to the production.
Having recently directed productions including Twelfth Night, My Fair Lady and Metamorphoses, Stead is known for bold, actor-driven storytelling and a strong visual flair.
His Rocky Horror Show was first performed in Durban last year, where it garnered rave reviews.
For its Montecasino run, audiences can expect that production to return with the same fearless spirit that has helped make Rocky Horror a perennial favourite.
The staging promises to be visually striking and musically explosive while remaining true to the anarchic heart of O’Brien’s original musical.
Sets are designed by Greg King.
More than a musical — it is an experience
Part of the magic of The Rocky Horror Show is that audiences are not simply watching from the sidelines.
For generations, fans have embraced the traditions that surround the cult classic. Dressing up, singing along and delivering the expected audience retorts have become part of the experience for devoted followers.
That makes the Montecasino production particularly appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers.
For those who already know every word, it is an opportunity to return to a beloved theatrical world.
For first-timers, it is a chance to discover why a musical that first hit the stage in 1973 continues to attract audiences more than 50 years later.
A theatrical collaboration built for a big night out
The production brings together two established forces in South African theatre.
Pieter Toerien Productions has long been associated with commercial theatre in South Africa, while LAMTA is recognised for nurturing performance talent.
Their collaboration promises a high-calibre production designed to deliver the spectacle, music and theatrical energy audiences have come to expect from The Rocky Horror Show.
And with Montecasino providing the setting, the production is shaping up to be one of Johannesburg’s most talked-about theatrical outings of the year.
Don’t dream it. Be it.
Whether you arrive in full Rocky Horror attire or simply want to experience one of theatre’s most enduring cult classics, the message is clear: leave your inhibitions at the door.
The Rocky Horror Show runs at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre from 23 October to 6 December 2026.
Tickets range from R200 to R495, with bookings available through Webtickets and the theatre box office. Special group booking discounts are also available.
The production carries an PG16 rating.
