So, you’ve just snagged your first set of keys to a place you can call your own. Welcome to a big step in adulting, Gen Z!

Of course, you want to make sure your new pad is decked out with all the latest smart tech and eco-friendly bling, not to mention some solar panels for when the dark times of loadshedding hit. But before you pop that kombucha, let’s talk about something super important: buildings and home contents insurance.

Yeah, we know, it’s not as exciting as unboxing your furniture and cool devices but trust us when we say insurance is the ultimate home accessory you don’t want to skip. At King Price Insurance, we want to make your life as simple as possible so you can focus on the things you love doing.

Wynand Van Vuuren, Client Experience at King Price shares these handy tips:

Tip 1: Smart homes need smart insurance

You’ve got the Wi-Fi sorted and an app-controlled TV, but have you ever thought about what would happen if your gadgets got fried in a freak lightning storm? No? That’s where home insurance comes in. If anything goes haywire, you won’t be left in the dark—literally. Chat with your insurer to make sure-sure everything worth covering is covered. You’ll sleep better knowing your home is smartly insured.

Tip 2: Gone eco-friendly?

You’ve done your part for the environment by picking a home that has sustainable materials and energy-efficient everything. But here’s the thing: those solar panels and bamboo floors are awesome, but they can also be pricey to fix. Always make sure your insurance policy is as green as your home by checking that your eco-friendly features are covered.

When chatting to your insurer about your home policy, ask how they value those sustainable features. If not, and the proverbial hits the fan, you might be left without a foot to stand on when it comes time to submit a claim.

Tip 3: It’s all about the content, baby

Let’s get real—your home is more than just four walls and a roof. It’s filled with all the things that make it uniquely you. Sadly, the vast majority of South Africans are underinsured when it comes to their home contents. Don’t become just another stat. Look beyond your tech and expand your inventory making sure that all your items are covered for their full value.

Also, don’t forget to update your inventory when you splurge some of that bonus on something new. Got a new big-screen TV? Upgraded your furniture? These changes can impact your cover, so keep things updated.

Tip 4: Keeping it safe

Okay, living in South Africa you know about the importance of security. Whether it’s smart locks, cameras, or an alarm system, make sure your policy covers your security features.

Tip 5: Get an insurance BFF

Insurance isn’t exactly thrilling if you’re not in love with it like we are. But having a pro in your corner can make all the difference. Chat with an insurance agent who can break down all the jargon and help you find the best cover for your needs. Think of them as the ultimate insurance wingman.

Insurance might not be the most exciting part of buying your first home, but it’s definitely one of the most important. By following these straightforward tips, you’ll be ready for anything life throws your way. Now, go enjoy your new digs!
