The science behind smelly feet – and 10 ways to stop it

Foot odour is a common yet often embarrassing issue that affects people of all ages, particularly in summer as heat and humidity spike. Rather than having to throw away shoes every few months, there are several small lifestyle changes that sufferers can adopt to keep feet fresh and healthy, so this isn’t a recurring problem.

“Smelly feet might seem to be a minor issue, but it can have a detrimental impact on a person’s emotional wellbeing,” explained Lynsey Hammond, MD for Kroko, manufacturers of leading South African footcare products. “In summertime, the heat and humidity can cause excessive sweating which exacerbates the problem. Whereas, in winter, people tend to wear closed shoes more which also results in more sweat and heightened foot odour. Fortunately, with a few simple footcare techniques, people can eradicate the odour.”

What causes smelly feet?

The main reason for foot odour is sweat. Surprisingly, feet have more sweat glands than any other part of the body, and when confined in shoes, the moisture creates the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. These bacteria break down sweat and dead skin cells, producing the unpleasant smell associated with foot odour. Factors that contribute to increased foot sweat include:

  • Warm, humid weather
  • Exercise
  • Excessive standing
  • Being overweight
  • Hormonal changes
  • Hyperhidrosis

10 steps to keep feet fresh

The best way to end smelly feet is by adopting improved foot hygiene practices. Here are 10 simple steps Kroko have shared to keep those feet clean and odour-free.

Step 1: Wash feet well – Use warm water and antibacterial soap to clean feet thoroughly every day, and more often if it’s a particularly hot and humid day.

Step 2: Dry feet properly – Bacteria thrive in damp environments so ensure feet are completely dry, especially between the toes, before putting on socks or shoes.

Step 3: Use foot powder – A dedicated product like Kroko Foot Powder is designed to keep feet dry for longer, thereby reducing odour-causing moisture. This can be applied to the feet once dried. Kroko foot powder also contains anti-fungal ingredients to help prevent athlete’s foot and fungal infections on the toes and nails.

Step 4: Use odour-neutralising sprays – Special footcare sprays – such as Kroko Foot Spray – can be applied to the feet or in shoes for on-the-go freshness. Kroko Foot Spray has antifungal and antibacterial protection, ensuring lasting results.

Step 5: Put on breathable socks – Choose cotton, bamboo, or moisture-wicking synthetic socks to reduce sweat buildup. Socks must also be changed daily – or more on hotter days – to keep away moisture and prevent bacterial growth.

Step 6: Put on breathable shoes – Choose shoes made from natural, breathable materials like leather or mesh will significantly reduce foot odour.

Step 7: Rotate shoes – Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes daily, giving them time to dry out properly.

Step 8: Soak feet regularly – A weekly foot soak with tea tree oil or vinegar can help reduce bacteria and odour.

Step 9: Keep nails trimmed – Short, clean nails prevent bacteria and fungi from accumulating.

Step 10: Remove calluses – Improve foot health by removing calluses and dead skin. Try Kroko Corn and Callus Remover ointment, Kroko CornFix, or Kroko Medicated Corn Plasters to treat this effectively.
