Bringing Home Twins or Multiples? Six Essential Health Tips Every Parent Should Know

Dis-Chem expert shares practical advice to help families navigate the unique challenges of raising more than one newborn at a time.

Welcoming twins or multiples into the world is a joyful milestone that doubles the love, excitement and unforgettable moments. It also introduces parents to a unique set of responsibilities that require thoughtful preparation, consistent healthcare and plenty of support.

While many parents spend months preparing nurseries and stocking up on baby essentials, healthcare professionals say that the first few months after birth are equally about establishing healthy routines that promote safe sleep, proper feeding, development and the wellbeing of the entire family.

According to Lizeth Kruger, Clinic Executive at Dis-Chem and Dis-Chem Baby City, parents should not place unnecessary pressure on themselves to achieve perfection.

“Parents of multiples often feel pressure to do everything perfectly because they are caring for two or more babies at once. The reality is that preparation, support and consistent healthcare check-ups are far more important than perfection,” says Kruger.

She adds that twins and multiples are more likely to be born prematurely, making regular healthcare visits and following recommended immunisation schedules especially important.

“Multiples are often born prematurely, which means closer monitoring and strict adherence to immunisation schedules in those early months. Because premature infants have underdeveloped immune systems, vaccinations offer critical protection against preventable diseases at their most vulnerable.”

Here are the six key areas Kruger recommends every parent of twins or multiples should prioritise.

1. Understand the Challenges of Premature Birth

Twins and multiples are more likely to arrive before their due date, increasing the likelihood of breathing difficulties, feeding challenges, infections and developmental delays.

Parents are encouraged to attend every scheduled clinic appointment, carefully monitor each baby’s feeding routine and weight gain, and seek medical advice immediately if they notice symptoms such as fever, poor feeding or breathing difficulties.

Early monitoring can play a vital role in identifying concerns before they become more serious.

2. Make Safe Sleep a Daily Priority

Safe sleep remains one of the most effective ways to protect newborns.

Although twins shared the womb before birth, each baby should sleep in their own cot on a firm, flat mattress without pillows, bumpers or soft toys.

Kruger explains that allowing multiples to share a cot increases the risk of accidental airway obstruction, overheating and makes it more difficult for parents to monitor each baby’s wellbeing individually.

Providing each infant with a separate sleeping space creates a safer environment while allowing caregivers to respond quickly if any concerns arise.

3. Reduce the Risk of Infection

Newborn babies naturally have immature immune systems, and premature infants are particularly vulnerable to illnesses.

One of the viruses parents should be aware of is Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a highly contagious virus that affects the lungs and airways.

Simple preventative measures can significantly lower infection risks, including:

  • Practising good hand hygiene.
  • Limiting contact with visitors who are unwell.
  • Properly cleaning and sterilising feeding equipment.

These everyday habits help create a healthier environment during a baby’s most vulnerable months.

4. Build Safe Feeding Routines

Breastfeeding remains the recommended source of infant nutrition, but parents of multiples may breastfeed directly, express breast milk, use infant formula where appropriate, or combine feeding methods depending on their circumstances.

Whatever feeding approach is chosen, each baby’s routine should be monitored individually to support healthy growth and development.

Parents should:

  • Never prop bottles during feeding.
  • Correctly prepare and store feeds.
  • Thoroughly clean and sterilise bottles, feeding equipment and breast pumps.
  • Monitor feeding patterns and weight gain for each baby.

Keeping individual feeding records can also help identify concerns early and support timely healthcare intervention.

5. Don’t Overlook Parental Wellbeing

Looking after twins or multiples can be physically exhausting and emotionally demanding.

Kruger notes that mothers of multiples may face a higher risk of postpartum depression, while both parents can experience significant sleep deprivation and ongoing stress.

If feelings of sadness, anxiety or overwhelm continue, parents are encouraged to seek professional support as early as possible.

Accepting help from family and friends, joining support groups for parents of multiples and speaking to qualified clinic nurses or healthcare professionals can make a meaningful difference.

Caring for yourself is an essential part of caring for your children.

6. Prepare Your Home for Emergencies

As multiple babies grow together, home safety becomes even more important.

Parents should babyproof their homes early, maintain a well-stocked first-aid kit and ensure everyone involved in childcare understands infant CPR and basic first aid procedures.

Labelling bottles, clothing and baby supplies can also reduce confusion and help simplify daily routines when caring for more than one infant.

Preparation Builds Confidence

Raising twins or multiples can feel overwhelming at times, but parents do not have to navigate the journey alone.

With preparation, consistent healthcare, supportive routines and a strong support network, families can create an environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

As Kruger concludes:

“With good routines, a strong support system and regular healthcare check-ups, parents can create a safe and nurturing environment where both their babies and their family can thrive.”

For families welcoming more than one newborn, the journey may require extra planning—but it also brings double the milestones, double the memories and countless moments worth cherishing.
