From 12–21 September 2025, the Afriforum Teater stage will come alive with Ruth the Musical, an original kingdom-stage production blending ancient truth with modern-day relevance.
Produced, conceptualised, and written by Polyda van Niekerk and JM White, co-produced, co-written, directed, and choreographed by Ferdinand W. Gernandt, this genre-bending musical intertwines two powerful timelines:
-
The biblical journey of Ruth, a widowed Moabite woman who chooses loyalty and faith over fear.
-
A modern-day story following Chloe, a young woman navigating grief, scepticism, and rediscovering hope.
A Story that Bridges Generations
In the ancient timeline, Ruth follows her mother-in-law Naomi to Bethlehem despite loss and poverty. Through courage, loyalty, and divine providence, she meets Boaz — a kind landowner who becomes her protector and redeemer. Their love overcomes cultural barriers, paving the way for a royal lineage that leads to King David.
In the present, Chloe meets Liam, a fellow student whose faith challenges her doubts. As she uncovers her late mother’s steadfast belief in God — mirroring Ruth’s devotion — Chloe’s heart begins to heal.
Anointed Storytelling and Musical Brilliance
“This production is rare,” says Gernandt. “Every element feels anointed — the writing, the music, the cast. It’s extraordinary.”
The musical’s score weaves soulful ballads, modern gospel, comedic beats, and energetic ensemble numbers, taking audiences from barley fields to university flats and hospital corridors. The result is a deeply moving reflection on hope, redemption, and divine timing.
