Love arrives when we least expect it.

Sometimes it appears in a fleeting moment, a chance encounter, a new beginning, or even in the middle of life’s uncertainty. That powerful idea sits at the heart of “Sometimes Love”, the brand-new single from GRAMMY-nominated East African-born vocalist and songwriter Somi, featuring acclaimed Nigerian sibling duo The Cavemen.

Released ahead of her forthcoming album What Does It Take to Bloom?, the song offers listeners a warm, groove-filled journey that captures both the spirit of contemporary African music and the universal search for connection.

Recorded in Lagos, Nigeria, “Sometimes Love” radiates the vibrant energy of one of Africa’s most influential cultural capitals while showcasing the musical chemistry between Somi and The Cavemen.

A Song About Keeping Your Heart Open

At its core, “Sometimes Love” is an invitation.

An invitation to remain hopeful.

An invitation to stay open.

And perhaps most importantly, an invitation to believe that love can arrive at any stage of life.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Somi explains:

“This song is about keeping an open heart and the possibility of finding love – in all its forms – at any moment in our journey.”

The result is a soulful and uplifting recording that blends heartfelt storytelling with infectious rhythms, creating a song that feels equally suited for quiet reflection and joyful celebration.

A Taste of What’s to Come

“Sometimes Love” serves as the second single from Somi’s upcoming album What Does It Take to Bloom?, scheduled for release on 7 August via Salon Africana.

The project is co-produced by Benjamin James of The Cavemen. and represents a significant artistic evolution for the internationally respected singer-songwriter.

Rather than offering straightforward answers, the album explores deeper questions surrounding growth, transformation and identity.

It asks whether we recognise our own personal growth while it is happening or only once we have already changed.

Through a contemporary approach to heritage-centred music, the album combines global influences with deeply personal storytelling, creating a body of work rooted in reflection, self-discovery and emotional honesty.

From Loss to Love

The release follows Somi’s lead single, “We’re All Falling,” one of the album’s most emotionally resonant tracks.

Written during a period marked by personal loss, the song confronts mortality with remarkable vulnerability and grace.

It reflects on life’s fragility while encouraging listeners to embrace healing, live fully in the present and extend compassion to themselves during difficult times.

Together, the two singles reveal the emotional depth and range of the upcoming project.

While “We’re All Falling” explores grief and acceptance, “Sometimes Love” offers a hopeful reminder that beauty and connection can emerge even amid uncertainty.

Mapping the Journey Within

For Somi, every album tells a story of place.

Throughout her celebrated career, she has explored the cultural intersections between Africa and America, creating music inspired by Nigeria, Harlem and the enduring legacy of African icons such as Miriam Makeba.

With What Does It Take to Bloom?, however, the journey becomes more personal.

Written and recorded between Dakar, Lagos, Paris and New York City, the album shifts its focus inward.

Rather than mapping a city, country or historical moment, Somi turns her attention to the landscape of the self.

The album becomes an exploration of belonging, womanhood, identity and personal transformation.

An Artist Beyond Categories

Throughout her career, Somi has built a reputation for refusing easy categorisation.

Her music effortlessly blends jazz, soul, highlife, spoken word and African musical traditions into a sound that feels uniquely her own.

That artistic freedom remains central to the new project.

The album finds Somi taking greater creative and vocal risks while trusting her instincts more deeply than ever before.

By stepping outside traditional labels and expectations, she embraces a form of artistic blooming that mirrors the themes explored throughout the record.

A Soundtrack for Self-Discovery

Ultimately, What Does It Take to Bloom? is an album about becoming.

It reflects on life’s uncertainties, the complexities of womanhood, the search for belonging and the ongoing journey toward wholeness.

Rather than presenting self-discovery as a destination, Somi embraces it as a process—one that is often messy, unfinished and deeply human.

Through every lyric and melody, she invites listeners to see parts of themselves reflected in the music.

And if they do not, she offers something equally powerful: the opportunity to witness an artist finding her way home to herself.

With “Sometimes Love” now available on major streaming platforms, fans have another glimpse into what promises to be one of Somi’s most personal and compelling projects to date.

If the new single is any indication, What Does It Take to Bloom? may become one of the year’s most heartfelt explorations of love, growth and transformation.
