The search for the next generation of filmmaking talent has officially begun.

The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 are now open for entries, inviting emerging filmmakers from around the world to showcase their creativity on one of the industry’s biggest international stages. Now in their fifth year, the awards continue their mission of discovering exceptional talent and connecting promising creators with some of Hollywood’s leading professionals.

Established by Creo in partnership with Sony, the awards are free to enter and are designed to identify filmmakers at pivotal moments in their careers, helping transform creative potential into professional opportunity.

This year’s edition also marks an exciting milestone with the introduction of a brand-new Immersive category, presented by Meta, recognising filmmakers pushing the boundaries of storytelling through emerging technologies.

A Launchpad for Tomorrow’s Filmmakers

More than a traditional film competition, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards provide shortlisted creators with direct access to the global film industry.

Filmmakers selected for the shortlist will be flown to Los Angeles to participate in an exclusive four-day industry programme hosted at the iconic Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City from 7 to 10 June 2027.

The experience concludes with the prestigious awards gala on 10 June 2027.

Throughout the programme, participants will attend interactive masterclasses and industry sessions led by Sony Pictures executives and leading professionals, covering topics including:

  • Film production
  • Film acquisition
  • Working with press and publicists
  • Animation techniques
  • Soundtrack creation
  • Cutting-edge filmmaking technology

Beyond technical knowledge, the programme provides invaluable networking opportunities, allowing filmmakers to build relationships with international industry leaders and fellow creatives from around the world.

A New Era of Immersive Storytelling

One of the biggest additions to the 2027 awards is the introduction of the Immersive category, presented by Meta.

The new category celebrates short films that place audiences directly inside the story through immersive formats, including:

  • 3D video
  • 180° video
  • 360° video

Open to both fiction and non-fiction projects, as well as live-action and animated productions, the category reflects the growing role immersive technology is playing in the future of filmmaking.

The winner will receive a Meta VR device together with a US$5,000 cash prize.

Six Categories for Emerging Talent

Filmmakers can submit entries across six competition categories.

The Fiction category recognises original narrative storytelling.

Films must be between 5 and 20 minutes in length.

The winner, selected from a shortlist of ten filmmakers, will receive:

  • US$2,500 cash prize
  • An invitation to attend the Los Angeles workshop programme

The winner and commended filmmakers for this category will be announced in April 2027.

Sustainability Prize Returns

Also returning for 2027 is the Sustainability Prize, established by Creo and Sony.

The award recognises short films that creatively communicate how themes such as:

  • Environment
  • Accessibility
  • Diversity
  • Equality
  • Inclusion

can inspire collective action towards a better future.

The winner will receive:

  • US$5,000 cash prize
  • Sony Digital Imaging equipment

Key Dates for Filmmakers

Entries for the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 are free and open to filmmakers worldwide.

The winners of the Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation and Student categories will be announced during the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on 10 June 2027.

Celebrating the Future of Cinema

As the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards enter their fifth year, the programme continues to provide emerging storytellers with more than international recognition.

By combining global exposure, mentorship, industry education and direct access to Hollywood professionals, the awards offer filmmakers an opportunity to develop their craft while becoming part of an international creative community.

With the addition of the Immersive category, the 2027 edition also acknowledges the evolving ways stories are being told, opening new possibilities for creators exploring the future of cinematic experiences.
