Unveiled by Canon in Johannesburg on 16 September 2026, the camera combines a compact, travel-ready body with a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, advanced autofocus, high-speed continuous shooting and up to 7.5 stops of image stabilisation.
Building on the EOS R8, the EOS R8 Mark II is aimed at photographers looking for greater control and capability in a lightweight body.
Full-frame quality in a lightweight body
At the centre of the EOS R8 Mark II is a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, paired with Canon’s DIGIC X processor.
Canon says this combination delivers clarity, rich colour and impressive dynamic range.
The camera also features In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS) technology, offering up to 7.5 stops of stability when coordinated with a compatible lens. This is designed to make handheld photography easier, particularly when shooting in low light or while moving.
Weighing approximately 499g, or 546g with a battery and memory card, the EOS R8 Mark II is built with portability in mind.
Its new streamlined EOS design also introduces customisable buttons, controls and modes, allowing photographers to configure the camera around their shooting style.
Built for moments that do not wait
Travel photography is often about timing.
That is where the EOS R8 Mark II’s speed-focused features come into play.
The camera can shoot at up to 40 frames per second, while its expanded buffer can handle up to 73 RAW files in a single burst, according to Canon.
There is also pre-continuous shooting in H+ mode. The feature records approximately half a second before the shutter button is fully pressed, providing up to 20 additional images.
That could mean the difference between missing a fleeting expression and capturing it.
Canon’s example scenarios range from wildlife on safari and street performers to festival crowds and spontaneous family moments.
Autofocus that follows the action
The EOS R8 Mark II uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with Deep Learning subject detection.
The system recognises and tracks people, animals and vehicles. It can detect eyes, faces, heads and bodies to help maintain focus on moving subjects.
Canon has also improved tracking persistence, allowing the camera to maintain focus when a subject briefly disappears from view.
For travel photographers, that can be useful in crowded environments where people frequently move behind other subjects.
The autofocus system can also operate in light levels as low as EV -7.5, which Canon says is the same level as its flagship EOS R1 professional camera.
Keeping familiar faces in focus
The EOS R8 Mark II also introduces Register People Priority.
Photographers can register up to 10 faces in the camera and up to 100 faces on a memory card.
Once registered, family members and friends can be automatically recognised when they appear in the frame. The camera then focuses on them according to the priority selected by the user.
For group photographs, busy streets and spontaneous encounters, the feature is designed to help keep the people who matter most in focus.
A compact system for exploring more
The EOS R8 Mark II is compatible with Canon’s RF lens range, including several lightweight options.
These include the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM, the ultra-fast RF 45mm F1.2 STM prime lens and the RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM telephoto zoom.
Canon has also made handling changes compared with the EOS R8.
A new multi-controller is designed to make operating the camera quicker when shooting handheld. The optional Canon Extension Grip EG-E2 adds further handling support and includes a separate tripod socket and direct access to the camera battery.
Give every destination its own look
The EOS R8 Mark II is not only about speed and portability.
Canon has included creative tools such as Picture Styles, Filmtone Colour Filters, Custom Picture and Look File (LUT) support.
These features give photographers more ways to shape the visual character of their images in-camera.
The camera also includes an adjustable Smooth Skin effect, designed to create natural-looking portraits without requiring complex post-processing.
Then there is another intriguing addition: Canon’s Dual Pixel 3D imaging technology.
The EOS R8 Mark II is the first Canon camera to include the technology. It allows users to capture JPEGs containing depth information and convert them into 3D content through the free Dual Pixel 3D Converter App for Windows.
Ready to stay connected
Travel photography increasingly happens in real time, and Canon has built connectivity into the EOS R8 Mark II.
The camera supports Wi-Fi at 2.4GHz and 5GHz, as well as Bluetooth 5.3.
Through the Canon Camera Connect app, users can remotely shoot and share images from a smartphone.
Automatic backups and image sorting through image.canon are also designed to help travellers manage their content while away from home.
A high-speed USB-C port provides data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps, alongside USB charging and power delivery.
The camera can also be charged while travelling with a power bank, while USB livestreaming adds another option for creators who want to share their experiences live.
A hybrid camera for photography and video
The EOS R8 Mark II is also designed for creators who want photography and video capabilities in the same camera.
Canon says the camera can record oversampled 4K video from 6K, while Full HD recording can reach 180fps for slow-motion footage.
For a more cinematic presentation, the camera offers Cinema View with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, along with Custom Picture profiles including Canon Log 3 and HLG.
Movie Digital IS is also available to help stabilise handheld video.
