That question drives SUPER SCAM ME, a new investigative documentary special from National Geographic featuring Emmy Award-winning journalist Mariana van Zeller.
Produced by Muck Media and directed by Jeff Plunkett, the one-hour special takes van Zeller deep inside the world of romance scams, where deception, technology and psychological manipulation can turn an online relationship into a devastating financial crime.
SUPER SCAM ME premieres on Sunday, 18 October 2026 at 21:00 CAT on National Geographic across Africa.
The special will be available on DStv 181 and StarTimes 220, with the documentary also available on Disney+ in South Africa.
When the journalist becomes the target
Romance scams have become one of the fastest-growing and most devastating forms of financial crime.
The rise of generative artificial intelligence is adding another layer to the problem. The technology can convincingly imitate celebrities and public figures, making fraudulent identities increasingly difficult to recognise.
According to the supplied press release, an estimated one in seven adults has lost money to this form of deception.
In 2025 alone, romance scammers stole more than $1 billion from American victims.
For van Zeller, those numbers are not simply statistics.
After years of reporting on the scam industry, she decided to experience the tactics from the other side.
She becomes the prey
In SUPER SCAM ME, van Zeller creates a new online dating persona and goes undercover as the target of a romance scam.
The investigation becomes a real-life social experiment.
Rather than simply observing scammers from a distance, she places herself inside the environment they use to manipulate their targets.
Her objective is to understand and expose the tactics, technologies and psychological manipulation used to deceive victims.
But the investigation quickly becomes more personal.
A scammer becomes the focus
Van Zeller eventually focuses on one particular scammer.
He poses as a four-star general and becomes increasingly persistent and manipulative.
As the investigation develops, van Zeller teams up with a white-hat cyber hacker in an attempt to uncover the scammer’s true identity and location.
The investigation then moves beyond the digital world.
Van Zeller sets out to confront the scammer face-to-face.
That transformation — from online investigation to real-world pursuit — forms one of the documentary’s central elements.
The human cost behind the scam
While the investigation explores the people and technology behind romance scams, SUPER SCAM ME also turns its attention to those left dealing with the consequences.
Van Zeller meets victims whose lives have been dramatically affected by these crimes.
Among them is a woman who was deceived into believing she was in a relationship with Jon Bon Jovi.
What she believed was a genuine romantic connection ultimately left her facing foreclosure on her home.
Her experience highlights how the consequences of romance scams can extend far beyond losing money.
They can affect homes, financial security and the lives people have built.
“So this time, I made myself the target”
Van Zeller says the investigation was shaped by a reaction she has heard repeatedly after reporting on scams.
“I’ve spent years reporting on scams, and the reaction I hear most is ‘How could anyone be so stupid? That would never happen to me.’ But it can, and it does happen to anyone.”
She adds:
“So this time, I made myself the target.”
The approach places the journalist directly inside the experience she has spent years investigating.
The investigation continues beyond television
The SUPER SCAM ME investigation will also extend into van Zeller’s podcast, “The Hidden Third.”
Through an innovative collaboration between National Geographic and Muck Media, special episodes dedicated to SUPER SCAM ME will air during the week of 12 October.
The episodes will feature exclusive interviews with the white-hat cyber hacker and the victim featured in the documentary special.
The additional episodes will give audiences another opportunity to explore the people and investigation behind the documentary.
From the underground economy to romance scams
Van Zeller is the host and executive producer of National Geographic’s Emmy-winning series “Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller.”
Through the series, she has spent years investigating some of the world’s most dangerous underground economies.
Her work has earned a record-setting 88 Emmy nominations and 16 wins.
With SUPER SCAM ME, that investigative approach turns towards a form of crime increasingly shaped by online identities, technology and human vulnerability.
