A stop sign can tell a driver to pause. An arrow can point towards a new destination. But for young people, these familiar road signs can also represent something far more personal: the choices that shape their lives.
On Saturday, 24 October 2026, learners from Mitchells Plain and the Cape Flats will bring that message to the stage at Liberty Promenade’s 15th annual Next Generation Musical Showcase.
This year’s theme, “En Route to Change”, invites participating schools to transform everyday street signs into creative messages about decision-making, resilience and personal growth. Through music, movement, poetry and storytelling, learners will explore the challenges they face at school, at home, in friendships and in the digital world.
When street signs tell a bigger story
Life rarely follows a perfectly marked route. Young people must make decisions, face uncertainty and take responsibility for their actions. Sometimes, moving forward also means recognising when it is time to change direction.
That idea sits at the heart of this year’s showcase.
From stop signs and warnings to arrows pointing towards new destinations, learners will reinterpret familiar road symbols as reflections of the paths available to them. Each school will bring together groups of five to eight learners to create performances inspired by the theme.
Their stories may explore online behaviour, responsibility, resilience and the freedom to choose a different path when the one ahead no longer feels right.
The message is simple: signs can offer direction, but the choices that shape a future ultimately belong to the person making them.
Taking the message beyond the stage
The creativity will not end when the performances do.
Each participating school will also design a street-sign-inspired installation reflecting its interpretation of choice, life experiences and safer online behaviour. These creations will be displayed at Liberty Promenade, giving shoppers and the wider community an opportunity to engage with the ideas shared by the learners.
After the showcase, the installations and performances will form part of a Community Choice exhibition. Shoppers will be able to vote for their favourite school performance and creation. They will also stand a chance to win R10,000.
The exhibition extends the event’s message beyond the auditorium, allowing the learners’ work to spark conversations with the community.
R80,000 to support participating schools
This year’s showcase also brings an increased prize pool. Participating schools will compete for a share of R80,000 in cash prizes, up from R60,000 in 2025.
The prize money will support improvements and educational needs at the winning schools. Beyond the financial reward, the event gives learners a platform to express their ideas, share their experiences and be heard.
For Brenda Bibby, General Manager of Liberty Promenade, that opportunity is central to the showcase.
“Every year, these learners remind us just how much young people have to say when they are given the opportunity and the freedom to express it in their own way,” says Bibby.
“This year’s theme is particularly relevant because young people are making choices in a world that can be difficult and noisy. We want Next Generation to remind them that their voices matter, their choices matter and changing direction can sometimes be an important part of moving forward.”
