December may still feel a little way off, but South Africans planning a festive escape have a good reason to start making arrangements now.

According to RoomRaccoon’s latest South African Summer Hotel Performance Report, the average booking lead time across independent hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, and lodges increased by 10 days year-on-year. It rose from 41 days to 51 days.

December bookings showed an even longer lead time. Travellers securing festive accommodation were booking an average of 58 days before check-in.

That shift matters for anyone hoping to secure the right accommodation without stretching the holiday budget. At The Capital Hotels, Apartments and Resorts, guests who book at least 60 days in advance can receive 25% off their stay at any property in the group, including SEVEN Hotel, Villas & Spa.

With the reported December booking lead time sitting at 58 days, the difference is just two days. Planning slightly further ahead could unlock a significant saving on accommodation.

For a mid-December arrival, that means starting to make arrangements around the middle of October. The festive season may seem distant, but the booking window is already approaching.

Choose the holiday you actually want

Where you stay can shape the entire trip.

A city hotel puts restaurants, attractions and spontaneous outings within easier reach. A spacious apartment may suit a longer stay, especially when travellers want room to spread out or prepare some meals themselves. Accommodation near the beach can make early mornings and seaside days part of the experience.

Booking early gives travellers more opportunity to choose accommodation that fits their plans.

Leave it too late, and the process can become a matter of selecting whatever remains available. Instead of finding a place that suits the holiday, the holiday may end up being shaped by the accommodation left to book.

Keep the whole group together

Festive travel often means bringing together family and friends who spend the rest of the year in different places.

That can make accommodation planning complicated. Parents travelling with young children may have different needs from groups of adults. Some guests may need convenient lift access, while others may arrive on late flights.

Finding a suitable arrangement for everyone takes coordination.

Multiple rooms and larger units can be harder to secure when demand builds. Booking earlier gives groups more time to coordinate their plans around a confirmed place to stay, rather than trying to piece together separate bookings across different areas.

It also makes it easier to agree on dates, organise arrivals and plan activities together.

Give your holiday budget some breathing room

Accommodation is often the biggest expense in a December getaway. Once that cost is confirmed, the rest of the budget becomes easier to manage.

Travellers can then plan for petrol or flights, restaurants, day trips, gifts and school holiday activities. Knowing what has already been committed makes it easier to decide how much remains available for everything else.

The alternative is leaving a major expense until November, when accommodation choices may be more limited and finding a suitable option can become more difficult.

Securing a booking earlier also removes one major decision from the final weeks before departure.

Take one task off the festive-season list

The final months of the year can fill up quickly. Work deadlines, school concerts, social commitments and family arrangements all compete for attention.

Holiday planning can easily become another task squeezed into an already busy calendar.

Confirming accommodation early helps take that responsibility off the list. With the booking settled, travellers can focus on the details that make the trip their own, from activities and meals to what goes into the suitcase.

It is a simple step that can make the lead-up to the holidays feel more manageable.

Make your December booking count

Whether your festive season means relaxed family mornings, beach days, city adventures or getting everyone together under one roof, planning ahead gives you more time to organise the experience you want.

It may also unlock a meaningful saving.

Book at least 60 days before check-in to receive 25% off your stay at The Capital Hotels, Apartments and Resorts, including SEVEN Hotel, Villas & Spa.
