The President Hotel Reduces 145 Tonnes of CO₂ Emissions with Landmark Solar Investment

Above the Atlantic, where waves crash against Bantry Bay’s rocks and sunsets paint the horizon, a new kind of light is rising at The President Hotel. Not the flicker of candles during load shedding, nor the hum of diesel generators straining against darkness—but a clean, enduring light drawn directly from the sun.

This month, The President Hotel—one of Africa’s largest Green Key certified establishments—announced a R15 million renewable energy investment, marking a transformative chapter in its #StayGreen journey. The initiative will prevent 145 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, the environmental equivalent of planting 4,325 trees, while eliminating 9,000 litres of diesel consumption each year.

For a hotel that has long symbolised luxury hospitality in Cape Town, this project represents something more enduring than elegance: leadership in the urgent fight for sustainability.

A Solar Milestone, A Global Message

Sigenstack

Launched to coincide with Zero Emissions Day (21 September), the installation is both symbolic and practical. Partnering with AOCon Consulting Engineers and Forest Energy, the hotel will deploy cutting-edge Hybrid SigenStack technology: a 1.2 MWh gateway, 1.2 MWh battery storage, and a 140 kWp solar PV ballast system mounted on the rooftop.

Together, these systems will generate approximately 20% of the hotel’s power requirements, reduce peak loads, and provide essential backup during load shedding—all while significantly shrinking the hotel’s carbon footprint.

For an industry often reliant on carbon-heavy stopgaps like diesel, the President Hotel’s move is nothing short of groundbreaking.

Technology on Display: Sustainability Made Visible

In a rare initiative for the hospitality sector, the hotel will make its solar infrastructure visible to the public. Guests will be able to view the inverter and battery systems in a specially designed first-floor garage installation, complete with a display screen showing real-time solar production, hotel consumption, and battery levels.

This transparency transforms sustainability from an abstract commitment into an educational experience, where visitors can literally see how clean energy is powering their stay.

Leading By Example in Tourism

The hotel’s Managing Director, Jeremy Clayton, reflects with pride:

“Over the past decade, The President Hotel has consistently invested in sustainable initiatives, and we’re incredibly proud to reach this milestone. We were one of the first hotels in Africa to receive Green Key certification, and now, with this solar project, we’re positioning ourselves as leaders in sustainable hospitality. We’re proud to align with Cape Town Tourism’s vision of building a sustainable tourism environment.”

This is not just about keeping the lights on. It’s about showing that South Africa’s hospitality sector can balance luxury, resilience, and ecological responsibility—offering both comfort to guests and hope for the planet.

A Perfectly Timed Transformation

By early October, the system will go live, coinciding with the reopening of the hotel’s renovated poolside area. With new local landscaping, a kids’ play zone, and a revamped Deck Bar, the relaunch is perfectly timed to also mark Energy Efficiency Day (1 October).

Guests lounging by the pool won’t just see the Atlantic sparkle—they’ll know their stay is powered by a system designed to protect the very environment that makes Cape Town so extraordinary.

A Legacy of Light

In a world often defined by rising temperatures, rolling blackouts, and shrinking resources, The President Hotel’s initiative is more than a business decision. It is a statement: hospitality can no longer be separate from sustainability.

Each watt captured from the Cape sun is a promise—to future guests, to the city, and to generations who deserve to inherit more than the scars of our excess.

As the solar panels hum to life this October, the President Hotel will not just keep the lights on—it will shine a path forward for the entire hospitality industry.
