Movie nights are getting a major upgrade in the Western Cape.
Ster-Kinekor Tyger Valley has completed a full refurbishment, introducing a new collection of entertainment experiences designed for movie lovers, families, luxury seekers and gamers. The upgraded complex officially opens to the public on Friday, 9 October 2026, bringing several new ways to enjoy entertainment under one roof.
The revamp introduces the APEX premium large-format cinema, two Cine Prestige luxury theatres, a colourful Kids’ Cinema and SKX-PERIENCE, described by Ster-Kinekor as Africa’s first free-roam virtual reality (VR) arena housed within a cinema complex. A stand-alone Costa Coffee kiosk also joins the offering.
Together, these additions transform the cinema complex into a destination for more than just watching a film.
APEX: Bigger screens, bolder sound
For audiences who want to feel closer to the action, the new APEX Cinema brings Ster-Kinekor’s premium large-format experience to Tyger Valley.
Its large wraparound screen extends close to the walls and ceiling, creating a more immersive viewing environment. The auditorium uses 4K laser projection for brighter images, exceptional clarity and richer detail.
The visual experience is matched by an advanced 16.1-channel sound system. Multiple subwoofers, positioned around the auditorium and behind the screen, deliver powerful audio that audiences can both hear and feel.
According to Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor Theatres, APEX combines premium technology, large-scale presentation and immersive sound to make movie moments bigger and more engaging.
The new format makes its debut at the refurbished Tyger Valley complex.
Cine Prestige brings business-class luxury to movie night
For those who prefer their cinema experience with an added touch of indulgence, two auditoriums have reopened as Cine Prestige theatres.
The luxury format features single and double red leather reclining seats. Guests can enjoy drinks and snacks in an adjoining lounge or have refreshments served directly to their seats.
It is designed for moviegoers seeking a more intimate, premium experience, whether for a special date night or simply an opportunity to enjoy a film in greater comfort.
Ster-Kinekor says the new theatres add another dimension to the Tyger Valley entertainment offering.
SKX-PERIENCE: Step into another world
Gaming takes a bold new direction with SKX-PERIENCE, the new free-roam VR arena at Ster-Kinekor Tyger Valley.
The dedicated arena accommodates up to six players. Using advanced headsets, precision haptic controllers and spatial tracking, participants can physically walk, dodge and interact within digital environments in real time.
The curated game library spans different types of adventures. Players can explore tactical shooters such as The Finals, sci-fi combat experiences, underwater expeditions in Ocean Depths and prehistoric environments in Dinosaur Park.
The experience is designed for people aged 12 and older. It caters to casual gamers, families and corporates looking for innovative team-building activities. According to the announcement, the arena operates under international safety standards, with certified operators supporting the experience.
By bringing free-roam VR into a cinema complex, Ster-Kinekor is expanding the ways visitors can spend time at the movies.
A cinema made for kids
Younger moviegoers also have a new reason to get excited.
Tyger Valley’s Kids’ Cinema introduces a bright, colourful environment designed around children’s entertainment. The space includes its own foyer, activity tables, a catering counter and brightly coloured beanbag seats. Larger seats are positioned at the back for older children.
The concept gives children a dedicated space to enjoy films and playground-like facilities, while parents can relax during their visit.
It can also provide a different setting for birthday celebrations. Ster-Kinekor offers special ticket prices for Kids’ Cinema parties, allowing children to celebrate with friends and enjoy a movie together.
Costa Coffee adds another reason to visit
The entertainment revamp also brings Costa Coffee to the cinema foyer.
Following the success of its locations at Ster-Kinekor V&A Waterfront and Blue Route, the brand is opening another stand-alone kiosk at Tyger Valley. The menu offers a range of coffee drinks for customers to enjoy before, during or after a movie.
Importantly, the kiosk is also open to the public. Shoppers can therefore stop by for coffee without necessarily attending a cinema screening.
Tanya Heimann, general manager of Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, says the refurbished complex strengthens the centre’s position as a destination for shopping, connection and memorable experiences.
She also highlighted the timing of the reopening, which coincides with the centre’s “Gift to You” campaign.
New screens, new films and special offers
The launch brings a fresh line-up of titles across the new cinema formats.
Digger, starring Tom Cruise, is among the titles scheduled for the APEX screen. Tony and Verity is highlighted for Cine Prestige, while younger audiences can explore the animated worlds of Shaun The Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom and Forgotten Island.
Meanwhile, the VR arena offers its own selection of immersive adventures.
The upgraded complex also provides several ways for moviegoers to save through existing loyalty programmes and offers:
- The Epic Deal: SK Club members can sign up for free and get a movie ticket, drink and popcorn for R169.90 from Monday to Friday.
- Half-price Tuesdays: Half-price movie tickets are available on Tuesdays for screenings across all cinemas.
